지역성 구현을 위한 집합주택 원형 주거동의 표현 특성 연구

        문은미(Moon, Eun-Mi) 한국실내디자인학회 2013 한국실내디자인학회논문집 Vol.22 No.4

This study was aimed at determining the characteristics of circular multi-family housing under the assumption that the shape of a residential building affects local identity. A total of six case studies were included in this study, three case studies on idle historical industrial facilities turned into residential buildings and another three on multi-family housing located in newly developed residential complexes. The study drew its conclusions as follows. First, the design of circular multi-family housing was intended to maximize security and defense from the outside in older times. This was later developed as the terrace house style with geometric urban squares designed under the urban planning of the Baroque period. This evolved high-density housing with a courtyard in the center offering a green open space, with the aim of restoring a sense of humanity. Second, the six case studies on circular multi-family housing were analyzed from the viewpoint of each factor of local identity, including historical and cultural, landscape, and community. Third, the historical and cultural elements of circular multi-family housing are found in some unused historical industrial facilities remodeled into residential buildings. They provide new capabilities and shapes desired by society at a given time, while maintaining familiar styles and elements of history, integrating a legacy of the past into the present. Fourth, circular multi-family housing with unique shapes and structures often become landmarks of a region with their distinctive appearance against a uniform urban environment and the monotonous scenery of residential complexes. They also show a high level of visual awareness with the distinctive shapes made possible when new elements are added to a historical exterior. Finally, circular mum-family housing with courtyards in the center prompt social contact between inhabitants, especially with dormitories and rental houses for the low-income bracket, which provide a small individual units with high use common space. Circular multi-family housing are planned in a manner similar to a small village or a city. They are designed to enhance sense of community, allocating various public amenities and provide cultural and commercial spaces on the ground floor and courtyard areas.

This study investigates the examples of memorials in which participants can communicate and interact. Memorials as an urban public space provide various information and experiences to the visitors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the types of participants’ experience and the characteristics of memorial space. The 9 examples of the memorials are selected and analyzed by the experience type of participants. This study summarizes the characteristics of spatial representation of memorials as follow; first, the interactions and communications of participants are main considerations in designing memorials. This study defines three types of participants’ experience in memorials as educational, emotional and daily urban experiences. Second, the memorial space providing educational experience has narrative characteristics which are explanatory, representational, hierarchical and figurative. Memorials represent historical events and individuals in figurative ways. Participants in memorials learn the event, mourn for the dead and cure the grief through walking the guided route. Third, the memorial space providing emotional experience is indeterminate and open-ended characteristics which are contemplative, symbolic, and abstractive. While participants try to find the way to walk through and understand the meaning of the abstract forms by themselves, they interface the event and the victims in private and individual ways. Fourth, the memorial space providing daily urban experience is the familiar urban facilities embedded remembrance such as memorial square, bridge and fountain. Symbolism of memorials and effectiveness of urban facilities are engaged into the memorial design. They have functional, participatory, interactive and recreational characteristics. People experience the memorials involuntarily and casually during their daily lives. The memorials with urban facilities can be related to the present and the future of the city as well as the past of the city.

어린이도서관 좌식 열람실의 공간 구성 특성

As the number of children’s libraries has increased in Korea, it has been discussed to improve the quality of design in the libraries. In a reading room of children’s library, spatial consideration should be focused on the children under 10 years old since they are in important points to learn Hangul and to develop reading habits. This study is aimed to examine the characteristics of a floor-sitting reading room, where children can feel like a home, stay in clean and safe and play while reading. The seven case studies of floor-sitting reading rooms are analyzed from the viewpoint of each factor of physical environment, including structure, furniture, and decoration. The following is the summary of findings of this study. First, floor-sitting reading rooms tend to compose main reading areas around bookshelves. Reading areas create the characters by changing floor levels and arranging furniture associated with windows, columns, and wall-type bookshelves. In the reading areas, movable low-level tables are frequently placed for flexible space uses, and seats for reading tend to put together with fixed bookshelves. Second, the central areas of the reading rooms are often shaped in the forms of pods, storytelling areas, sculptures, and unique furniture. Especially storytelling areas and pods play the cores of the reading rooms with the varying steps of floors and pictorial graphics on walls. Third, decoration elements in the reading rooms are designed with graphics, visual displays, and sculptural decorations. In my case studies, spatial elements such as reading nooks, attics, tunnels, and shelters are not often found in the floor-sitting reading rooms even though children like to have them. Since it is the advantage of floor-sitting reading rooms where children can take off shoes and act freely, we should look for the design of such spatial elements in the floor-sitting reading rooms.

공공성 구현을 위한 현대 도서관의 외부지향 계획 특성 연구

        문은미(Moon, Eun Mi) 한국실내디자인학회 2015 한국실내디자인학회논문집 Vol.24 No.6

The study aims to identify the design character of libraries today into outwardness which enhances publicity in the library buildings. This design trend tends to be emphasized in contemporary civic libraries. In theses days, the libraires become not only to be the traditional places of information but also to be the multi-purpose places to provide community services and cultural spaces. Thus the contemporary libraries, especially big civic libraries, are willing to open to the public of diverse purposes and to accelerate social communication among them through outward design in the buildings. This study surveys literatures and identify accessibility, symbolism, openness, amenity, connection, as the characters of publicity in the libraries. The study also examines the outward design strategies of the libraries which enhance publicity in the ways of design to connect surrounding environment, to symbolize buildings, to wrap transparent external surfaces and to build interior spaces. The study finds in the case studies of ten outstanding civic libraries abroad which were built in relatively recent years that the outward design is achieved mainly through four ways. First, the libraries have connection with surrounding urban environment, thus have continuities from the surrounding. Second, the libraries have the shapes of landmarks which expose themselves and their roles to the outside. Third, the libraries have transparent surfaces through which outdoor environment penetrates into the buildings. Fourth, the libraries have corridors and halls which look like traditional urban public streets and plazas. The study concludes that outward design strategies which employ in contemporary libraries enhance publicity in the libraries. Thus the libraries can perform as multi-functional cultural and open places which accelerate social interactions among the public of cities. This study has the value as a research which emphasizes outwardness as the design strategies which enhance publicity in contemporary libraries.

도시 재난 메모리얼의 치유공간 계획 요소 연구 - 지진 메모리얼 사례를 중심으로 -

        문은미(Moon, Eun-Mi) 한국실내디자인학회 2021 한국실내디자인학회논문집 Vol.30 No.5

This study aims to analyze the healing elements of memorial designs, with which survivors and local residents cure their shocks and pains as well as overcome their traumas from disasters. The study analyzes four earthquake memorials; Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial, Memorial 27F, Concepción, Earthquake Memorial in Sichuan, and Cretto di Burri. Moreover, in order to understand the healing processes after traumas from the disasters, this study uses the three steps of healing, 1. Establishing safety, 2. Remembrance and Mourning, 3. Reconnection, of Dr. Judith Herman. As the study analyzes the memorial designs of the cases in the views of locations, space configurations, activities and experiences within them in the steps of healing process, the study figures out the healing elements of memorial designs which facilitate healing process after the traumas, as follow. First, the memorial designs which establish safety are recovering life grounds after destruction, introducing natural elements and connecting them to their lives, as well as supporting openness and views with surrounding configurations which increase safety, stability and accessibility. Second, the memorial designs which face remembrance and mourning are memorial places, walls, and markers as well as narrow and long corridors, such corridors and rooms, and spaces of artistic events which immerse personal experiences of the disasters. Third, the memorial designs which support reconnection with others, thus provide senses of empowerment, are the healing elements of the memorials which connect to daily spaces, and cultural and leisure spaces, thus facilitate social activities and encourage participations in local community which recover commonness and cultural traditions. The study concludes that the memorial designs ought to be not only the places of recording, remembrance, and mourning of the disasters, but also the healing places for the survivors of the trauma to secure safety, recover daily lives, and connect to others. Thus, the memorial designs prolong their senses and values to future generations.
