관념사(觀念史) 연구에서 데이터베이스 방법론이 지니는 의의

1950년대 문화의 지속적인 발전을 예증하기 위해 레이먼드 윌리엄스(Raymond Williams)가 주요 키워드들의 역사적 의미 변화를 분석하는 접근 방식을 확립한 이래 키워드의 역사적 의미분석은 관념사 연구의 주요 주제가 되었다. 이 글은 중국근대 정치사상의 기원과 변천을 연구하는 데 데이터베이스 체계를 사용하기 위한 기본적인 기법을 소개한다. 이 연구 과정에서 우리는 관념에 대한 새로운 해석, 즉 관념(idea)은 키워드들을 통한 사고의 표현이라는 것을 제안하고, 또한 데이터베이스시스템을 통한 관념사 연구방법을 주로 제시할 것이다. 여기에는 데이터베이스 구축, 관념의 표현으로서의 핵심어 확정과 사람과 컴퓨터의 상호작용을 통한 예문검색, 문장의 의미분석을 통한 키워드의 사전적·문맥적인 의미의 확인, 키워드의 의미 유형에 대한 분석과 통계, 그리고 키워드를 포함한 문장들의 데이터베이스 구축이 포함된다. 우리는 위 사항들에 근거해 사상의 기원과 변형을 연구하며 이러한 방법을 통해 관념사 연구가 경험을 통해 검증될 수 있다고 생각한다. 데이터베이스 체계를 통한 관념사와 지성사의 연구는 인문학의 주제를 다룬 연구에서 일대 혁신을 가져올 것이다. 이는 관념의 변천이 가진 내적 논리를 보다 세부적으로 조사하고 기존의 관념들을 검토할 뿐만 아니라 다양한 분야들(예를 들면 언어연구, 철학 등) 간의 협력을 위한 새롭고 강력한 도구를 제공할 것이다. 또한 중국, 일본, 한국의 근대적 관념의 기원과 변천에 관한 연구에서도 그들의 동일한 언어적 근원, 단기적인 시간의 틀, 문헌의 상대적 집중 그리고 밀접한 상호 영향으로 인해 데이터베이스시스템을 이용한 동아시아 관념사 연구는 점점 강점을 갖게 될 것이다. Since the 1950s when Raymond Williams established the analysis of the historical transformation of meanings of key terms as a means of tracing the continuous development of culture, the analysis of the historical meaning of keywords has become the main theme of the study of history of ideas. This essay introduces our basic technique of making use of the database system to study the origin of Chinese modern political thoughts and its transformation. In our study, we propose a new interpretation of ideas: we understand an idea to be the expression of thoughts by means of keywords, and we also primarily conclude that the best method for the study of the history of ideas is the database system. This system requires the building of a database, identifying the keywords used to express the ideas in question, and retrieving sample sentences through human-computer interaction, confirming the dictionary and textual meanings of keywords by analyzing the meaning of each sentence, analyzing and computing the meanings and connotations of the keywords, and, hence, building up the database of sentences which contain the keywords being studied. Our study of the origin and transformation of ideas is founded on the process described above, and we believe that, through this method, the study of the history of ideas is open to practical examination and we can build on our experience. The study of history of ideas and of intellectual history through the use of the database system will lead to a huge revolution in the study of the humanities. Besides investigating the internal logic of the transformation of ideas in more details, and examining existing ideas, it will provide a new and powerful tool for co-operation between many subjects (including language study, philosophy, etc.). In addition, due to shared language sources in China, Japan and Korea, where the adoption and development of modern ideas is concerned, as well as the short time-frame involved and the comparatively limited number of historical texts and their close interaction, the advantages of using the database system in the study of history of ideas in East Asia will be all the greater.
