Growth and yield of waxy corn (Zea mays L.) are reduced when grown in acid soils due to deficiency of nutrients including calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and molybdenum and toxicity of aluminum, iron, and manganese. This study was conducted to determine the effects of various soil amendments including phosphate fertilizer, lime, and manure compost on cultivation of waxy corn in an acid soil and to examine genetic sensitivity to acid soil condition. Manure compost application and co-treatment of phosphate fertilizer, lime, and manure compost resulted in enhanced marketable yield of waxy corn by 10.7% and 9.4%, respectively compared with control of NPK fertilization based on soil testing. Soil pH and contents of soil organic matter, available phosphate, exchangeable calcium, magnesium, and potassium of the two treatments at harvesting time were significantly greater than those of control, while there is no significant difference between the two treatments. The results obtained in the experiment indicated that efficient soil amendment of acid soil for cultivation of waxy corn can be application of manure compost. In addition, emergence rate and growth at early stage of HW9 were very poor compared with HW3 and Mibaeck2, showing genetic diversity of tolerance in waxy corn to acid soil environment.
