A recent development in cosmetics has extensively required the high functionality of cosmetic raw materials to increase their stability for light, heat and oxygen in air which can seriously reduce their biological activities. So, it is essential to develop new technologies for the stabilization of the raw materials. With this trend, we have focused on the development of new stabilization methods for major vitamin based cosmetics such as Retinol. Retinol is one of important vitamins with a wide variety of biological functions such as embryonic growth and development, vertebrate vision, immune reactions, and epidermal differentiation. It is also prime candidate for cancer chemoprevention. However, all vitamins show decreased biological activities by isomerization and photochemical and thermal oxidation. These degradation reactions inevitably reduce their available vitamin activities in stored and processed foods. It is also well-known that the environmental conditions such as high humidity, low pH and high temperature significantly decrease the stability of retinol and its relatives. To overcome these problems, we have investigated the encapsulation of the retinol by using adaptable vesicles and layered double hydroxides.
