Acoustic performance of HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) silencers is generally predicted by theoretical formulation derived from acoustic wave equation and existing empirical formulations suggested by the National Environmental Balancing Bureau (NEBB). In this paper, the limitation of theoretical approaches to predict acoustic performance of silencers is studied, and also the way in which the acoustic performance of large size silencers can be predicted using computational analysis is discussed. The absorption coefficients of rectangular lagging silencers are obtained from existing experimental data using computational analysis.
