본 연구는 초등학생들이 학년민속체육대회를 통해서 어떤 경험을 하며, 그것이 갖는 교육적 의미는 무엇인지를 심층적으로 이해하는데 목적이 있다. 연구 참여자는 S초등학교 5학년 55명, 6학년 43명이며, 그 가운데 3명의 학생은 개별 심층 면담을 하였다. Spradley(1979)가 제안한 영역 분석, 분류 분석, 성분 분석 방법으로 자료를 분석하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 초등학생들은 학년민속체육대회를 대체로 즐겁고 유쾌한 경험으로 받아들이고 있었으며, 그것이 갖는 의미에 대해서는 전통 민속놀이를 체험할 수 있는 기회인 동시에 우리 전통 문화의 중요성을 인식하고 계승, 발전시킬 수 있는 기회가 될 수 있다는 생각을 하고 있었다. 또한, 학년민속체육대회의 종목을 잘 선정하고, 민속놀이 여건을 잘 조성하면 소통, 이해, 협동 등과 같은 인성을 발달시킬 수 있는 기회가 될 수 있다는 인식을 하고 있었다. This study aimed to evaluate how elementary school students would find the experience of participating in folk games as well as the depth of their understanding of the educational meaning thereof. Research subjects consisted of 55 5th grade and 43 6th grade elementary school students. Three of these students were each given an in-depth, individual interview. The data was analyzed using domain analysis, taxonomic analysis and componential analysis; methods proposed by Spradley(1979). The study concluded that elementary school students generally find participating in folk games to be a pleasant and enjoyable experience. They see it as an opportunity to experience a part of their tradition and also, recognizing the importance of their heritage, an opportunity to inherit and develop it. Furthermore, when the sports played in folk games are selected with care and a good environment in which to play them created, students recognize it as an opportunity to develop a better personality by enhancing communication, understanding and cooperative skills.
