The air-fuel mixing is one of the key factors which determine the performance of compression ignition(CI) engines. Employing gasoline-like fuel with relatively high octane rating, a gasoline direct compression ignition(GDCI) engine can allow enough mixing period prior to auto-ignition, and thus improve emission characteristics. In this study, a qualitative analysis via fundamental experiment using a constant volume combustion chamber(CVCC) was implemented to understand the effect of injection timing and pressure on mixing behavior, and furthermore, the combustion phenomena. The result demonstrated that earlier injection may cause misfire from over-mixing under certain conditions, however, by reducing the injection pressure, mixing can be properly diminished, which will compensate the effect of injection timing.
