국제공인 유·초등학교 교육과정(IB PYP)의 특징과 시사점 탐색

본 연구는 국제공인 유·초등 교육과정인 IB PYP(International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program)의 특징을 탐색하고 우리나라 교육과정 개발에 주는 시사점을 도출하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 IB 교육과정 전반과 PYP 교육과정, PYP를 도입한 학교 교육과정 문서들을 총론적, 각론적 차원에서 분석하였다. 연구 결과, IB 교육의 궁극적 목적이 되는 ‘IB 학습자상’은 중요 지식과 기능 습득, 개념적 이해 개발, 바람직한 태도와 행동 능력이 균형 있게 개발된 인간상을 담고 있었으며, 이에 PYP는 총론적 차원에서 '지식, 개념, 기능, 태도, 행동'을 학습 구성의 필수 요소로 설정하고 구체화하였다. 학교교육은 크게 교과를 통한 학습과 초학문적 주제중심 탐구학습으로 대별되었는데, 후자가 PYP 교육의 핵심적인 특징이 된다. PYP는 교과성취기준을 초학문적 주제와 연계, 초학문적 주제를 중심으로 한 교과 성취기준 구성, 초학문적 주제에 따른 탐구 프로그램의 틀 계획 등을 통해 교사주도의 교육과정 통합 가능성을 강화하고 있었다. PYP를 운영하는 학교들은 유·초등단계 학생들의 언어와 수학적 기본 기능에 대한 완성도를 높이기 위한 다양한 평가 방안과 각 교과별 평가만이 아니라 초학문적 주제 탐구학습에 대한 다면적 평가 계획을 수립하고 있었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 필수 능력을 구체화하는 인간상의 설정, 각론이 상위의 총론적 교육목적을 향해 일관성을 갖출 수 있도록 하는 각론 구성의 틀 개발, 교과통합 교육에 집중해 볼 수 있도록 하는 장치 마련, 교사들의 통합적 교육과정 재구성 작업에 수월성과 방향성을 줄 수 있는 형태의 각론 구성, 초등단계에서 언어와 수리의 기본능력 형성과 탐구중심 통합학습 활동을 위한 면밀한 평가 계획 수립과 운영 등을 시사점으로 제시하였다. The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB PYP) and draw implications for Korean curriculum development. We analyzed the IB program in general, the PYP curriculum, and the PYP-based school curriculum documents. As a result, we found that the “IB Learner Profile,” which is the goal of IB education, contains balanced ideals regarding the educated person. Therefore, the PYP consists of and specifies five essential elements of knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action. Education is divided into subject learning and inquiry learning based on transdisciplinary themes, the latter being a key feature of PYP education. The PYP has strengthened the possibility of teacher-led curriculum integration via the method of linking achievement standards to transdisciplinary themes or constructing achievement standards based on transdisciplinary themes, as well as developing the frameworks of inquiry programs based on these themes. Assessment plans are designed to improve the completeness of elementary students’ language and mathematical basic skills, and not only the assessment plan of each subject, but also, multidimensional assessment plans for inquiry learning have been established. Based on the above results, this study suggests implications for national and school curriculum development.
