In recent years, many regulations of exhaust gas emissions have been enhanced in not only automotive engines but also marine and power generation engines. So we have done the various studies to reduce NOx in a medium speed diesel engine, HYUNDAI HiMSEN, for satisfying the next IMO(International Maritime Organization) regulation (Tier2, 20~30% reduction for current limit). The selected parameters in this study are the main design parameters of fuel injection system such as fuel cam, plunger diameter and fuel nozzle geometries etc. These have significant effect on engine performance and combustion because the characteristic of fuel injection is determined by these. Therefore, firstly, the simulation of fuel injection system and engine performance are carried separately about the one type of marine diesel engine, HYUNDAI HiMSEN 8H32/40 Engine. And using optimization software, we done the co-simulation of fuel injection system and engine performance and the optimization of main design parameters. As a result of optimization simulation, we could search the design points which are satisfied with the various target mode.
밀러사이클을 이용한 대형 디젤엔진의 NOx 및 연료소비율 저감 연구

Performance simulation has been carried out to enhance SFOC and NOx of a large diesel engine. Various intake valve closing times with higher compression ratio of turbocharger were evaluated by performance simulation to realize Miller cycle on a large diesel engine. Intake valve closing time 500, 510 and 630deg.ATDC were decided as test conditions to minimize NOx and SFOC. Engine tests were performed to validate simulation results and to find out the best intake valve closing time. Engine tests show that intensified early Miller cycle can improve SFOC and NOx at the same time. But extremely early and late Miller cycle deteriorate the engine starting and have higher smoke at low load over invisible limit. So intake valve closing time of 511deg.ATDC is selected in respect of SFOC, NOx and smoke on a large diesel engine
