This paper analyzes the impact of imports from China on the increase in patents of Korean manufacturing firms for 2006-2015 using the Survey of Business Activities. As a result, the higher the proportion of imports from China, the higher the level of innovation of firms, and imports of intermediate goods more affects the increase than final goods. This result shows that imports from China intensifies competition among Korean firms, and firms innovates to escape from competition. Also, by utilizing the input-output table, we find an additional channel that imports from China helps firms reduce costs and innovate production processes. These results suggest that imports from China not only generate the escape-competition effect but also promote innovation through costs reduction.

The decline of GDP growth and secular stagnation of Korea have raised a concern about potential growth among economists and policy makers. We analyze the impact of slowing growth of start-ups and even declining start-ups on productivity growth. Employing Mining and Manufacturing Survey panel data, we estimate aggregate total factor productivity(TFP) growth. In addition, we investigate how the impact of start-up and growth of young plant on productivity growth in manufacturing have changed through the decomposition of TFP growth rate. We show that decreases in the average productivity growth rate of young plant were a major factor in explaining the decrease in the TFP growth rate since the mid to late 2000s. A decrease in young plant shares resulted by declines of start-up has a relatively small impact on productivity growth. Especially a drop in the productivity of young plant has affected the productivity growth of the manufacturing sector since the mid to late 2000s. Since 2010 however productivity growth has recently declined not only in young plants but also among older plants. Analyzing the causes of the decline in productivity of young and high-growth plants is expected to help analyze the causes of the overall decline in growth in the Korean economy and to help form policies to improve productivity.
