A cylindrical C.V.C.C was used to investigate the combustion characteristics of methane-air mixture under various initial pressure conditions and excess air ratios. Combustion pressure duvelopment was measured by piezoelectric pressure transducer to investigate the characteristics of combustion in quiescent mixture. Obtained results are as follows. The maximum pressure of combustion depended on the effect of the initial pressure of combustion chamber and on the lean level of mixture. The ratio of initial combustion duration to total combustion duration was inverse proportion to initial charge pressure of C.V.C.C.

Recently many studies related to the lean-burn technology of gas engine have been carried out to improve fuel enconomy by minimizing the reduction of power output and to reduce exhaust emisson. Lean combustion is effective way of improving fuel economy and reducing emission gas of S.I. It is investigated that the effect of initial pressure, excess air ratio and ignition time on combustion performance and exhaust emission characteristics of stratified pattern in a cylinderical constant volume combustion chamber. Gas Chromatography is used to determine the CO2, CO, O2, UHC concentrations in the chamber. The measurement of methane-air mixture are performed excess air ratio varing from 1.1 to 1.4 . As a result, in the case of RI shows better exhaust emission characteristics. Especially Rl condition reduced more CO2 and UHC concentration than that of HI or LI conditions. In case of Inhomogeneous condition, UHC and CO2 is reduced in accordance with increasing initial charge pressure but O2 is reduced. Especially, when the excess air ratio of initial charge mixture is 3, UHC and CO2 is reduced compared to any other conditions.
