N/A Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) were recoded from the scalp of 40 normoacoustic patients with chronic renal failure, and the results were compared with those obtained from 50 age-matched, nor- moacoustic control subjects. The usefulness in the diagnosis of uremic encephalopathy and the relation between BAER and duration of disease or duration of hemodialysis were investigated. The results were as follows: l. In chronic renal failure, the peripheral transmission time (IPL I) and central transmission time (IPL I-V) were delayed significantly: p<0.01 and p<.001, respectively, 2. It seems that BAEP is a useful method in the diagno3is of uremic encephalopathy in patients with chronic renal failure (sensitvity 64.3%, specificity 73.1%). 3. In chronic renal failure, there was no significant correlation between the latency of the BAER and duration of disease or hemodialysis (p>0.1). 4. There were no significant changes in the BAEP after 1 month of renal transplantation in 6 renal transplanted patients with chronic renal failure (p>0.1).
