Tramadol is a frequently prescribed opioid analgesic for moderate to severe pain. However, tramadol has thepotential for misuse by patients and leads to many adverse opioid effects such as central nervous system depression, respiratory depression, and death. Therefore, in December 2017, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced thecontraindications for tramadol in pediatric patients under the age of 12 years. The purpose of this study was to analyzethe prescribing trends of tramadol in pediatric patients in Korea. To identify prescriptions that included tramadol, we usedthe 2017 and 2018 databases of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service - Pediatric and Adolescent PatientSample. Among patients under the age of 12, the number of prescriptions per million patients was recorded according toinpatient stay and outpatient visits. The results obtained for 2017 and 2018 were compared to evaluate change. The numberof prescriptions for patients under the age of 12 were 2,360 (8.33%) and 2,696 (10.24%) per million patients for inpatientstay and 25,959 (91.60%) and 23,618 (89.70%) per million patients for outpatient visits in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Compared to 2017, in 2018, the tramadol prescription for inpatient stay increased, whereas it decreased for outpatientvisits. However, the proportion of tramadol prescription remained high in the clinic. Therefore, our findings suggest theneed to promote awareness to reduce the inappropriate use of tramadol in pediatrics.
