With energy crisis, it is indispensable to be used co-combustion of low rank coal in pulverized coal-fired power plants. This study describes detailed measurements of 0.7㎿ pilot-scale plant under various co-firing conditions of two different low rank coals. This experiment is carried out by measuring gas temperature and gas concentrations especially in axial and radial directions of furnace at excess air ratio 1.2. The results show that co-firing combustion characteristics of low rank coals are similar to weighted average of single coal combustion’s. Further studies will be needed to verify this research by experiments using diverse low rank coals and conditions.

This research shows the slagging propensity of 5 coals used in power plant in Korea. We evaluated the slagging propensity by using a thermo-mechanical analyzer (TMA) and ash fusion temperature (AFT).The newly proposed slagging index(BHEL index) has been compared with the existing slagging indices for 5 coal ash samples. Consequently, It was shown that the BHEL indices of 4 coals excepting Moolarben is similar to the existing traditional indices of those coals.
