Dissimilar friction welding were produced using 15㎜ diameter solid bar in chrome molybedenum steel(KS SCM440) to carbon steel(KS S45C) to investigate their mechanical properties. The main friction welding parameters were selected to endure good quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, Virkers hardness surveys of the bond of area and HAZ and macrostructure investigations. The specimens were tested as-welded and post-weld heat-treated. The tensile strength of the friction welded steel bars was increased up to 100% of the S45C base metal under the condition of all heating time. Optimal welding conditions were n=2,000(rpm), P₁=60(MPa), P₂=100(MPa), t₁=4(s), t₂=5(s) when the total upset length is 5.4(㎜).

The main friction welding parameters were selected to endure good quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, Vickers hardness surveys of the bond of area and heat affected zone. The specimens were tested as-welded and post weld heat treated(PWHT). And also, the relationships between the weld parameters and nondestructive coefficients, such as AE counts and ultrasonic attenuation coefficient. The tensile strength of the friction welded steel bars was increased up to 100% of the S45C base metal under the condition of all heating time. The toughness of PWHT specimens is higher than as-welded. It is seem to be that there are not evident relationship between AE counts, ultrasonic attenuation coefficient and heating time.

In this study, the dissimilar friction weldings: were produced using 20mm diameter solid bar in forgineg steel (KS SF45) to carbon steel (KS SM45C) in order to investigate their mechanical properties and the relationship between the weld parameters and the nondestructive coefficients. The optimal friction welding parameters were selected to ensure good quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile test, micro-Virkers hardness surveys of the bond of area and microstructure investigations. The specimens were tested for as-welded (AW). And also, the relationships between the weld parameters and nondestructive coefficients, such as AE counts and ultrasonic attenuation coefficient were investigated.

This paper presents the experimental examinations and statistical quantitative analysis of the correlation between the cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) during plastic deformation periods of the welding and the tensile strength and other properties of the tube-to-tube welded joints of O.D. 30㎜ (I.D. 18 ㎜) nozzle steel. This is a new approach which attempts finally to develop real-time quality monitoring system for friction welding. And this study results in practical possiblility of real-time quality control more than 100% joint efficiency showing good weld with no micro structural defects.
