This paper is a translation and commentary on Kaifengfu (開封府) by Taipinghuanyuji (太平寰宇記) written by Yueshi (樂史) in the early North Song (北宋). Taipinghuanyuji is a book that examines the history of Fu(府), Zhou (州), and Xian(縣) throughout the country in the early days of the North Song, as well as the geographical and cultural aspects and perceptions of the surrounding peoples, including products, customs, and historical figures. It can be said to be a comprehensive humanities geography in China and neighboring countries around the 10th century. Taipinghuanyuji divides the whole country into 14 districts, including Henandao (河南道), and contains a large number of books on the academic geography of each region. As a historical book, it provides very important data for researching the region from the early Song Dynasty to the time. In addition, the historical value of this book is even higher in that the historical records contained in Taipinghuanyuji are rarely passed on. In recent years, research on Taipinghuanyuji is in progress, paying attention to these historical values, but the research remains at a very insignificant level compared to the vastness of the books. Therefore, this paper intends to enhance Taipinghuanyuji’s value as a humanistic geography by translating a part of Kaifengfu, the capital city, which was the center of North Song’s politics, economy, and culture.
