The application of algae biomass for fermentation has been highlighted to produce value added fuels and chemicals such as biodiesel, bioethanol, biogas, biohydrogen, and other co-products. However, most post-extracted algae residue from fermentation process still contains as much as 50% of organic waste which can be valuable substrate for further bioenergy recovery. In this study, we extracted biodiesel from cultivated microalgae biomass by fermentation, and the post-extracted biomass were further attempted for the electrical energy recovery using a microbial fuel cell (MFC). We obtained high COD removal efficiency of approximately 160-1150 ppm/day on different algae residue loading, and simultaneous electricity generation of 0.28W/㎡ from MFC operation. The implementation of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method by real-time load adjusting, improve COD removal efficiency (85%) and output voltage and power density (0.37 V and 0.33 W/㎡, respectively) as compared to the control.
