The self-determination has been one of the major topics of special education professionals concurring with its importance for the education outcomes of students with disabilities. However, it is not operationalized in one measureable concept yet. Rather, the term “self-determination” is representing many other concepts and recognized interchangeably with advocacy, efficiency, leadership, decision making, problem solving skills, and so on. The purpose of this paper is to review the concept of “self-determination” how it has been used in the literature and to introduce some of the instruments that are available in the field.
