On the Breeding of Dumbbell Bivoltine Silkworm Breeds of Bombyx mori L. Tolerant to High Temperature and High Humidity Conditions of the Tropics

Singh, Harjeet,Kumar, Nair Suresh Korean Society of Sericultural Science 2010 International Journal of Industrial Entomology Vol.20 No.2

It is well established fact that under tropical condition, unlike polyvoltines, bivoltines are more vulnerable to various stresses i.e. hot climatic conditions of tropics, poor leaf quality and improper management during summer which are not conducive for bivoltine rearing. Therefore, attempt has been made in this study to develop promising bivoltine breeds tolerant to high temperature and high humidity conditions of the tropics. In the present study, by utilizing temperature tolerant breeds six breeding lines were made and at every generation the 5th instar larvae were exposed to high temperature and high humidity and the survived ones were back crossed with the breeds moderately tolerant to diseases were made to improve the quantitative traits. From F6 generations, alternate rearing in normal temperature and high temperature were conducted. At the end of F12 generation, it was possible to isolate three dumbbell breeds viz., HH8, HH10 and HH12 with improvement in quantitative traits. The methodologies followed for the development are discussed.

Effect of number of blades in ducted turbine system on kinetic energy extraction from chimney flue gases – benchmarking with wind energy system

Harjeet S. Mann,Pradeep K. Singh 대한기계학회 2018 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.32 No.11

A multi-blade ducted wind turbine, also called the diffuser augmented wind turbine (DAWT) has a good wind energy conversion effect over the traditional wind turbine. The market potential for energy recovery from the chimney flue gases made it necessary to explore the possibility of extraction of the energy from flue gases using the DAWT. The duct is a converging-diverging nozzle with the turbineblades located at the throat. In general 3 or more number of blades is frequently used to maximize the energy conversion to the bladetorque. The effect of number of blades on the power extraction by the energy recovery ducted turbine has been studied in this paper. A CFD-based simulation study has been carried out. The results so obtained have been benchmarked with the published data for the results for the ducted turbines for wind power generation. The general airfoil NACA4420, NACA4416 and NACA4412 were adopted to produce various composite profiles for turbine-blade. The large number of blades appears to provide the sufficient blade areas for the conversion of energy of flue gases to the turbine-rotor torque. On other hand the more number of blades also increases the blockage to the flue gases, resulting in increased back-flow. This paper presents the variation of power coefficient (C P ) and torque coefficient (C T ) with respect to the tip speed ratio (λ) for different number of blades, and varying blade geometry.

        Glutathione Reductase and Thioredoxin Reductase

Gaurav Kapoor,Harjeet Singh Banyal 대한기생충학열대의학회 2009 The Korean Journal of Parasitology Vol.47 No.4

Malaria parasites adapt to the oxidative stress during their erythrocytic stages with the help of vital thioredoxin redox system and glutathione redox system. Glutathione reductase and thioredoxin reductase are important enzymes of these redox systems that help parasites to maintain an adequate intracellular redox environment. In the present study, activities of glutathione reductase and thioredoxin reductase were investigated in normal and Plasmodium berghei-infected mice red blood cells and their fractions. Activities of glutathione reductase and thioredoxin reductase in P. berghei-infected host erythrocytes were found to be higher than those in normal host cells. These enzymes were mainly confined to the cytosolic part of cell-free P. berghei. Full characterization and understanding of these enzymes may promise advances in chemotherapy of malaria.

Sarcopenia is common in ulcerative colitis and correlates with disease activity

        ( Pardhu B Neelam ),( Rimesh Pal ),( Pankaj Gupta ),( Anupam K Singh ),( Jimil Shah ),( Harshal S Mandavdhare ),( Harjeet Singh ),( Aravind Sekar ),( Sanjay K Bhadada ),( Usha Dutta ),( Vishal Sharma 대한장연구학회 2024 Intestinal Research Vol.22 No.2

Background/Aims: Association of sarcopenia with disease severity in ulcerative colitis (UC) is not clearly defined. We planned to estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with UC as per the revised definition and its relation with the disease severity. Methods: A cross-sectional assessment of sarcopenia in patients with UC was performed. Disease activity was graded according to complete Mayo score. Hand grip strength was assessed with Jamar hand dynamometer, muscle mass using a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scan, and physical performance with 4-m walk test. Sarcopenia was defined as a reduction of both muscle mass and strength. Severe sarcopenia was defined as reduced gait speed in presence of sarcopenia. Results: Of 114 patients (62 males, mean age: 36.49 ± 12.41 years), 32 (28%) were in remission, 46 (40.4%) had mild-moderate activity, and 36 (31.6%) had severe UC. Forty-three patients (37.7%) had probable sarcopenia, 25 (21.9%) had sarcopenia, and 14 (12.2%) had severe sarcopenia. Prevalence of sarcopenia was higher in active disease (2 in remission, 6 in active, and 17 in severe, P< 0.001). Of 14 with severe sarcopenia, 13 had severe UC while 1 had moderate UC. On multivariate analysis, lower body mass index and higher Mayo score were associated with sarcopenia. Of 37 patients with acute severe colitis, 16 had sarcopenia. Requirement of second-line therapy was similar between patients with and without sarcopenia. On follow-up (median: 18 months), there was a non-significant higher rate of major adverse events in those with sarcopenia (47.4% vs. 33.8%, P= 0.273). Conclusions: Sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia in UC correlate with the disease activity. (Intest Res 2024;22:162-171)
