      • Value of a statistical life estimation of carcinogenic chemicals for socioeconomic analysis in Korea

        Objectives To protect public health from risk, the Minister of Environment in Korea legislated an act concerning the registration and evaluation of chemical substances. In this study, we estimated the value of a statistical life (VSL) of carcinogenic chemicals to evaluate the socioeconomic analysis in Korea. Methods The estimation of the health benefit can be calculated through an individual's VSL and willingness to pay (WTP). To estimate the VSL and WTP, we used a contingent valuation method through a web-based survey. Results The survey is conducted with 1434 people living in Seoul and six large cities. An analysis of the survey is essential to review the distribution of the characteristics of the target population. The statistically significant variables affecting the WTP are location, age, household income, quality of life. Through the review of data, we secured statistical validity. The WTP was estimated as 41205 Korean won (KRW)/person, and the estimated VSL appeared as 796 million KRW/person. Conclusions There is a case in which the amount of statistical life value is estimated in connection with domestic environmental policy, fine dust, etc. However, there are no cases of evaluation for chemical. The utilization of this result is possible for conducting other study with chemicals.

        공급망 ESG 관리에서 예상되는 분쟁 중재에 관한 연구

        “ESG management” guides companies to prioritize corporate social responsibility and sustainable development as key management objectives, going beyond mere financial performance pursuits. This approach involves creating a sustainable and robust supply chain by urging companies, acting as 'supply chain managers', to implement ESG management practices alongside their 'supply chain partners'. The domestic business community has been quick to respond to this trend, recognizing that failure to adhere to ESG standards set by organizations such as the EU and SEC could lead to severe repercussions, including exclusion from international trade and reputational damage. POSCO and NAVER, two leading Korean companies, are at the forefront of practicing ESG management effectively. They have both produced and publicly disclosed ESG management reports, showcasing their success in enhancing supply chain ESG management. However, as supply chain managers enforce ESG-related obligations on their suppliers, the likelihood of disputes between the parties may increase. In scenarios where supply chain ESG management leads to conflicts between supply chain managers and suppliers, commercial arbitration emerges as a viable solution for dispute resolution. This method offers several advantages, including the arbitrators' expertise, time and cost efficiency, the binding nature of decisions akin to a court's final judgment, international recognition under the New York Convention, confidentiality, and ample opportunity for parties to be heard. Our analysis focuses on the emerging disputes between supply chain managers and suppliers within the context of supply chain ESG management, particularly examining the cases of POSCO and NAVER. By categorizing the expected types of disputes and assessing the appropriateness of commercial arbitration for their resolution, we highlight the effectiveness of this approach. Furthermore, we propose leveraging the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board's role to enhance the use of arbitration in resolving supply chain ESG disputes, underscoring its potential as a strategic tool for maintaining sustainable and harmonious supply chain relationships.

      • Effects of the Ocean Healing Program on the Body Composition and Dynamic Balance in Middle-aged Women: Randomized Controlled Trial

        OBJECTIVES ‘Ocean healing’ refers to treatments using seawater, seaweed, mud, sand, and all substances coming from the sea used for curative and preventative purposes. Previous studies have been supported the use of seawater to therapy in improving physical and mental health. However, the clinical effects of ocean healing program using leisure-sports remain unknown. Therefore, we investigated the effect of the ocean healing program using a stand-up paddle board (SUP) on body composition and dynamic balance in middle-aged women. METHODS Thirty women aged ≥30 years participated for this study and were randomly classified into SUP group (N=15, mean age: 50.0±13.5 years) and control group (N=15, mean age: 52.0±12.6 years). Body weight, body mass index, %body fat, skeletal muscle mass, and skeletal muscle index were measured using InBody. We also conducted the Y-balance test to measure the dynamic balance ability. Participants in the intervention group performed the SUP program 3 times a week for 60 min, and the total intervention period was 10 weeks. RESULTS In the intervention group, 13 women completed the 10-week intervention. Body weight (P=0.004) and %body fat (P=0.002) was significantly decreased in the SUP group after intervention. Moreover, we found that skeletal muscle mass was increased in SUP group (P=0.029) but not in control group. Compared to the control group, the score of Y-balance test of the intervention group were significantly improved (baseline: 85.6±7.6 vs post: 96.2±5.4, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS On trial completion the primary outcome (body weight, %body fat, and skeletal muscle mass) was significantly improved compared with control group. We also found improved dynamic balance in the SUP group after 10 weeks intervention. Our findings suggest that implementation of an ocean healing program is an effective intervention to enhance body composition and dynamic balance in middle-aged women.

      • Comparative Study of Magnetic Characteristics of Air-Core and Iron-Core High-Temperature Superconducting Quadrupole Magnets

        <P>High-temperature superconductors (HTSs) have a much larger thermal margin than low-temperature superconductors, owing to their high critical temperatures. This characteristic allows HTS magnets to tolerate extremely high heat loads that may arise from radiation. Therefore, research on the development of HTS quadrupole magnets is progressing widely. Quadrupole magnets are commonly used for focusing the transported beams of particles in accelerators. In order to focus the beam, the quadrupole magnet uses an iron yoke with a hyperbolic contour. However, the iron yoke induces nonlinear magnetic characteristics because of saturation. Therefore, an air-core HTS quadrupole magnet is proposed to improve the magnetic characteristics. In this paper, we design air-core and iron-core HTS quadrupole magnet models using a harmonic matching method. The field gradient and effective length of both magnets are 12.1 T/m and 550 mm, respectively. In order to verify the performances of the proposed air-core quadrupole magnet, the magnetic field gradient, field uniformity, and effective length are analyzed for operating currents ranging from 50 to 400 A.</P>

      • 국내 지형적 특성을 고려한 MUSI 적용성 평가-도암호 유역을 중심으로-

        우리나라는 급경사 지대의 집약적 토지이용과 과다한 비료사용으로 인해 강우 시 탁수와 수질오염을 가중시키는 비점오염원에 대한 관리가 필요하다. 이에 환경부에서는 비점오염원관리지역을 지정하여 물환경보전법 및 관련 제도를 통해 비점오염원 관리를 추진하고 있으며 효율적인 비점오염원을 관리하기 위해 오염물질 및 유사량의 정량화를 위한 모니터링이 진행되고 있다. 그러나 모니터링은 시간과 인력, 많은 비용이 필요하기에 이를 대체할 다양한 수문모델이 사용되고 있다. 이 중 농업 비점오염원에 의한 수문 순환을 고려하며 유출량 및 수질의 시공간적 변화를 모의할 수 있는 Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) 모형이 많이 사용되고 있다. SWAT 모형은 토지이용도와 토양도의 조합으로 구성된 Hydrologic Response Unit(HRU)를 생성하게 되며, 각 HRU의 경사도와 경사장은 DEM을 이용한 소유역의 평균 경사도를 기준으로 산정한다. 그러나 경사도가 25% 이상인 HRU에 대해서는 경사장을 9.146m로 산정하므로 높은 경사도에 대해 경사장이 제대로 반영되지 않는다. 또한, SWAT 모형은 토양유실량을 산정할 때 Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE) 식을 사용한다. 그러나 MUSLE 식의 경우 미국의 중동부 지역 농지의 사용 용도에 따른 유사유출량의 변화 및 조절을 주목적으로 개발된 경험공식이기에 고정된 계수가 국내 지형의 특성을 반영하기 힘들다. 이에 본 연구에서는 SWAT 모형을 개선하고 정확한 유사량 산정을 위하여 남한강 상류에 위치한 도암호 유역을 대상으로 경작지 별 HRU를 생성하였으며, 실측 경사장과 경사도를 반영시켜 주었다. 또한, MUSLE 식의 계수를 사용자가 설정할 수 있는 MUSLE with Input coefficients (MUSI) 식의 계수를 수정하여 적용성을 평가하였다. 본 연구를 통해 SWAT 모형에서 실제 유출특성을 반영하고 환경부의 원단위에 적합한 모의가 가능하게 되면서 우리나라 오염원의 정량적 평가와 관리 척도에 활용될 것으로 기대된다.

        Field gradient calculation of HTS double-pancake coils considering the slanted turns and the splice

        To obtain Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurement of membrane protein, an NMR magnet is required to generate high intensity, homogeneity, and stability of field. A High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnet is a promising alternative to a conventional Low-Temperature Superconducting (LTS) NMR magnet for high field, current density, and stability margin. Conventionally, an HTS coil has been wound by several winding techniques such as Single-Pancake (SP), Double-Pancake (DP), and layer-wound. The DP winding technique has been frequently used for a large magnet because long HTS wire is generally difficult to manufacture, and maintenance of magnet is convenient. However, magnetic field generated by the slanted turns and the splice leads to field inhomogeneity in Diameter of Spherical Volume (DSV). The field inhomogeneity degrades performance of NMR spectrometer and thus effect of the slanted turns and the splice should be analyzed. In this paper, field gradient of HTS double-pancake coils considering the slanted turns and the splice was calculated using Biot-Savart law and numerical integration. The calculation results showed that magnetic field produced by the slanted turns and the splice caused significant inhomogeneity of field.
