Localization of lung abnormalities on chest X-rays using self-supervised equivariant attention
Gavin D’Souza,N. V. Subba Reddy,K. N. Manjunath 대한의용생체공학회 2023 Biomedical Engineering Letters (BMEL) Vol.13 No.1
Chest X-Ray (CXR) images provide most anatomical details and the abnormalities on a 2D plane. Therefore, a 2D view of the 3D anatomy is sometimes sufficient for the initial diagnosis. However, close to fourteen commonly occurring diseases are sometimes difficult to identify by visually inspecting the images. Therefore, there is a drift toward developing computer-aided assistive systems to help radiologists. This paper proposes a deep learning model for the classification and localization of chest diseases by using image-level annotations. The model consists of a modified Resnet50 backbone for extracting feature corpus from the images, a classifier, and a pixel correlation module (PCM). During PCM training, the network is a weight-shared siamese architecture where the first branch applies the affine transform to the image before feeding to the network, while the second applies the same transform to the network output. The method was evaluated on CXR from the clinical center in the ratio of 70:20 for training and testing. The model was developed and tested using the cloud computing platform Google Colaboratory (NVidia Tesla P100 GPU, 16 GB of RAM). A radiologist subjectively validated the results. Our model trained with the configurations mentioned in this paper outperformed benchmark results.

Machine or structural members subjected to fatigue loading will have a crack initiated during early part of their life. Therefore analysis of members with cracks and other discontinuities is very important. Finite element method has enjoyed widespread use in engineering, but it is not convenient for crack problems as the region very close to crack tip is to be discretized with very fine mesh. However, as the body force method (BFM), requires only the boundary of the discontinuity (crack or hole) to be discretized it is easy versatile technique to analyze such problems. In the present work fundamental solution for concentrated load x + iy acting in the semi-infinite plate at an arbitrary point $z_0=x_0+iy_0$ is considered. These fundamental solutions are in complex form ${\phi}(z)$ and ${\psi}(z)$ (England 1971). These potentials are known as Melan potentials (Ramakrishna 1994). A crack in the semi-infinite plate as shown in Fig. 1 is considered. This crack is divided into number of divisions. By applying pair of body forces on a division, the resultant forces on the remaining 'N'divisions are to be found for which ${\phi}_1(z)$ and ${\psi}_1(z)$ are derived. Body force method is applied to calculate stress intensity factor for crack in semi-infinite plate. Also for the case of crack emanating from circular hole in semi-infinite plate radial stress, hoop stress and shear stress are calculated around the hole and crack. Convergent results are obtained by body force method. These results are compared with FEM results.

The present investigation was conducted to know the effects of host age on development and morphological characteristics of Nesolynx thymus, a gregarious ectopupal parasitoid of the uzi fly, Exorista bombycis, a serious en do-larval parasitoid of the silkworm, Bombyx mori L. For experimentation, 3 - 11 day-old pupae of E. bombycis were exposed to 2 day-old adults of N. thymus at $25{\pm}2^{\circ}C\;and\;60{\pm}10%$ RH. A highly significant negative correlation between host age and the following development and morphological characteristics of the parasitoid was observed: number of pupae parasitised, total adult recovery, sex ratio and recovery, longevity, body length, wing span, abdomen length, and abdomen width of females. The findings of the present study clearly demonstrate that various development and morphological parameters of N. thymus are influenced by the age of E. bombycis pupae.

The electrocatalytic oxidative behavior of an antiarrhythmic drug, procainamide hydrochloride (PAH) at the gold electrode surface has been examined using different voltammetric methods like cyclic, linear-sweep and differential pulse voltammetry. Voltammograms obtained in this study reveal that the electrode exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity towards oxidation of the drug. The parameters that can affect the peak current at different pH, scan rate and concentration were evaluated. The number of electrons transferred was calculated. The current displayed a wide linear response ranging from 0.5 to $30.0{\mu}M$ with a limit of detection of 56.4 nM. The impact of potential interfering agents was also studied. The electrode displayed wide advantages such as simple sample preparation, appreciable repeatability, reproducibility and also high sensitivity. Furthermore, the feasibility of the proposed method was successfully demonstrated by determining PAH in the spiked human biological sample.

In India, mulberry (Morus spp.), the sole food plant of the silkworm, Bombyx mori (Linn.), is prone to infestation by the pink mealybug, Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green). Infestation by this pest causes apical shoot malformation, popularly known as 'tukra'. Occurrence of tukra causes an appreciable reduction in leaf yield and quality, leading to low silkworm cocoon productivity. For management of M. hirsutus (Tukra), an IPM package comprising mechanical, chemical and biological measures was demonstrated in the mulberry gardens of five Government Silk Farms in Mysore District (Karnataka, India) during 1995-96. A suppression of 76.0% in tukra incidence and 90.19% in mealybug population was recorded by employ the IPM package which led to an estimated 4,000 kg recovery in leaf yield/ha/year. The impact of IPM package in the management of M. hirsutus, the role of biocontrol agent (Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Muls.) in pest suppression and the cost-benefit analysis of the IPM package are discussed.

The occurrence of Anagyrus kamali, a solitary endoparasite of the mealybug, Maconellicoccus hirsutus has been reported for the first time from India. The parasitoid was fecund to parasitizing the field population of mealybug to the tune of 10.37 to 42.70% in different months. A comprehensive study on the development of the parasitoid on different stages of mealybug indicated that the parasitoid was able to complete its development in all the stages. Higher parasitism (67.48-78.08%) and more female progeny were observed when 3rd instar nymphs and adult female of the mealybug were exposed to the parasitoid. The biology of A. kamali studied at 25${\pm}1^{\circ}C$ temperature and 60${\pm}$</TEX10% R.H. The parasitoid completes its life cycle in 19.72$\pm$1.12 days. The duration of egg, larva (3 instars) and pupa were 2.67${\pm}$</TEX0.42, 8.80${\pm}$</TEX0.43 and 8.25${\pm}$</TEX0.38 days, respectively. On an average each female of A. kamali laid 39.0${\pm}$</TEX4.53 eggs. It was found to parasitising 8-10 mealybugs and depositing 1-3 eggs per host individual. Observations on adult longevity, parasitizing potential and sex ratio has also been recorded.
