SPACE ZONING CONCEPT-BASED SCHEDULING MODEL FOR REPETITIVE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

<P>Many researchers have studied effective space zoning to reduce the duration of a construction project and interference among work tasks. These studies, however, attempted to plan the construction schedule using the space zoning concept based on network-based scheduling methods. Accordingly, it was difficult to reflect the representative characteristics of space zoning, such as iteration and overlapping. To overcome such limitations of existing methodologies and to achieve schedule reduction of a construction project by maximizing productivity, a Space zoning Concept-based scHEduling ModEl (SCHEME) for repetitive construction processes that adopt simulation techniques was developed in this study. The result of the application of the developed model to actual construction cases shows that the model reflects well the space-zoning characteristics, and in terms of the reduction of the construction duration, the model yielded a superior outcome in nonspace-zoning cases. The model developed in this study is expected to produce an excellent effect on the repetitive construction processes, in terms of construction duration.</P>
Decision Support Model for Determining Cost-Effective Renovation Time

<P>The renovation of a building, instead of raising a new structure, is being scrutinized more closely at present as a sustainable alternative for reaping the benefits of improving a building's energy performance and mitigating its physical deterioration. The extent of the benefits would be dependent on the optimal renovation time determined through the building owner's decision-making process. Unfortunately, only a few studies have explored improvement of the decision-making process for determining an appropriate renovation time, making it difficult for building owners to conduct reliable cost-effective renovation planning. A model that estimates the optimal cost-effective renovation time of a building therefore would be a valuable tool, and the model introduced in this paper addresses this need. By applying the model to an actual renovation project as a case study, this model yielded 24 renovation alternatives for achieving a cost-effective renovation time, from which the optimal alternative was identified based on an economic analysis from the building owner's perspective.</P>

Recently, remodeling work to the existing commercial and residential buildings has been briskly considered, because it is expected that remodeling of the existing buildings can bring an increase of their value. In addition, to permit vertical extension of the existing buildings makes remodeling market of commercial buildings be stimulated. When it comes to consider the vertical extension remodeling projects, one of the most important decision-making points from the view of project owner is an economic performance expected due to newly extended space. Therefore, this research developed a model enabling to suggest the economical volume, which can earn “minimum payback period” and/or “maximum net profit,” of a particular vertical extension remodeling project by using several mathematical methodology. As a result of model application, it showed that the model can identify a vertical extension alternative having optimal performance in economic aspect. If the developed model is utilized, it``ll be useful in determining whether remodeling project will be carried out or not for project owners planning vertical extension remodeling projects.
A Digitalized Recomposition Technique based on Photo Quality Evaluation Criteria

Photographic evaluation is based mainly on qualitative factors which are very personal. Many state-of-the-art technologies are embedded on commercial cameras these days. In this paper, a new evaluation algorithm for photographic composition based on composition evaluation principles will be presented. The presented algorithm can be extended to photographic evaluation field. Algorithmic excellence will be proven by results. Finally, a variety of applications can prove its applicability.

<P>Using a surface and interfacial cutting analysis system (SAICAS) that can measure the adhesion strength of a composite electrode at a specific depth from the surface, we can subdivide the adhesion strength of a composite electrode into two classes: (1) the adhesion strength between the Al current collector and the cathode composite electrode (FAl-Ca) and (2) the adhesion strength measured at the mid depth of the cathode composite electrode (F-mid). Both adhesion strengths, FAl-Ca and F-mid, increase with increasing electrode density and loading level. From the SAICAS measurement, we obtain a mathematical equation that governs the adhesion strength of the composite electrodes. This equation revealed a maximum accuracy of 97.2% and 96.1% for FAl-Ca and F-mid, respectively, for four randomly chosen composite electrodes varying in electrode density and loading level.</P>
