Purpose: This research aimed to verify the effects of a 32-week low-intensity combined exercise program as an exercise intervention on body composition and functional fitness in elderly women. Method: A total of 24 subjects were assigned to Otago exercise group(n=12) and control group(n=12) randomly. A 60 minute Otago exercise was applied to them as the intervention 3 times a week for 32 weeks by 20-25%HRR. Exercise Intensity was set by using Polar and %HRR, with participants’ heart rates monitored. Body composition was measured and calculated to compare the effects of exercise on the baseline and 32 weeks later. Items for body composition contained height, weight, BMI, WHR, %fat, %LBM, Fat, LBM, fat/height, and LBM/height. Functional fitness was measured by Senior Fitness Test. Mean and standard deviations were calculated to analyze the research data by using SPSS Version 22.0. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to verify interactions between pre-post measurement and groups. Statistical significance was set at p<.05. Result: This research showed that no significant interactions between pre-post measurement and groups appeared in any body composition items for Otago exercise group. It showed a significant increase(p<.05) between pre-post measurements in WHR for Otago exercise group and between groups. There were significant interactions between time and groups in 30-second chair stand(p<.01), 30-second arm curl(p<.05), back scratch(p<.01) and 8-foot up-and-go(p<.05) for Otago exercise group. Significant increase appeared between groups in 30-second chair stand(p<.01), and 30-second arm curl(p<.001) for Otago exercise group. Significant increase appeared between time in 30-second chair stand(p<.05), and back scratch(p<.05) for Otago exercise group. Conclusion: Although 32-week low-intensity combined exercise had no effects on body composition in elderly women, it verified the significant decrease between pre-post measurements of WHR for exercise group. And this exercise program showed the effects on low body strength, upper body strength, upper body flexibility, dynamic balance and agility for exercise group in elderly women. In spite of low-intensity exercise by 20-25%HRR, this program can be used as an effective and safe exercise intervention to improve strength and prevent falls for elderly women living in a community.
