      • Nanoscale channels and tunnels in surface-modified poly(dimethylsiloxane)

Mills, Kristen L University of Michigan 2008 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

Exposing the elastomer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to oxygen plasma creates a very thin, stiff, and brittle surface-modified layer. Nano-scale crack patterns can be introduced to this layer with tensile stress. To optimize the pattern formation for a specific nano- or bio-technology research application, the surface-modified layer must be fully characterized. A characterization method was developed, using a combination of experiments and finite-element modeling. Phase imaging and nanoindentation with the atomic force microscope showed that the surface-modified layer was graded over approximately 200 nm, with an elastic modulus at the surface approximately ten-times that of the unmodified PDMS. Finite-element analyses indicated that the toughness of the surface-modified layer is extremely low (0.1--0.3 J/m2) and that the embrittlement extends 100--400 nm below that of the measured layer thickness, signifying that the cracks may extend deeper than the apparent layer thickness. Variations of the nanocrack-patterning method were used to produce functional nanoscale patterns. First, surface-modified PDMS cubes and microspheres were uniaxially compressed causing their surfaces to be decorated with nanocrack patterns. Pattern formation, due to the distribution of tensile stresses in the surface-modified layer, on the cube surfaces was associated with friction at the contacts with the platens; whereas, for the microspheres it could exclusively be attributed to the changing cross-sectional area along the axis of compression. Second, an array of parallel tunnel cracks was produced in the surface-modified layer, when sandwiched between PDMS substrates, with an applied uniaxial tensile strain. The tunnel cracks functioned as tunable nanochannels when they connected pre-patterned microchannel reservoirs. Modulated fluidic transport of single particles between the reservoirs was demonstrated and electrical resistance measurements confirmed the nanochannel adjustability (from approximately 1 mum wide to completely closed). Due to the compliance of PDMS, surface forces were able to cause the channel and tunnel cracks to close, or heal, upon removal of applied tensile strain. The self-adhesion of the nanochannel walls due to surface forces was studied and the conditions for collapse were determined. A method for determining and applying a non-uniform traction on the surface of bodies that are interacting due to surface forces was developed.

      • The cycle of relapsed/refractory disease among young adults with lymphoma: A grounded theory study

Mills, Jennifer New York University 2011 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

Cancer survivorship research is shifting toward identifying survivors not as one homogenous group, but rather as encompassing several subgroups with differing needs by age and disease-type. Young adults diagnosed between the ages of 15-39 represent one understudied population. Even less is known about the experiences of young adults with lymphoma whose disease is considered incurable upon diagnosis or becomes relapsed (disease returns) or refractory (disease does not respond to treatment). This study used qualitative methods to examine the experiences of fifteen young adults (median age of 24 years) with relapsed or refractory lymphoma from diagnosis, through recurrence and beyond. The data analysis revealed seventeen codes that are categorized into five themes describing how life changes upon diagnosis, the process of adaptation, how recurrence differs from diagnosis and the impact on life choices, relationships and worldview. The grounded theory generated through this study captures the cycle of relapsed or refractory disease among young adults with lymphoma. The findings suggest young adults, particularly those whose disease is not cured after primary treatment, have unique physical and psychosocial needs.

      • An investigation of suffering through the examination of the lived experiences of hospice patients

Mills, Junko Margaret The University of Rochester 2000 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

Although there is a historical and philosophical link between nursing and the suffering of people, a review of literature revealed that there are only a limited number of articles treating suffering conceptually or analytically, and the experience of suffering is under-analyzed. Further, a review of literature also revealed that the lived experiences of hospice patients, which were identified to be an appropriate place to begin an investigation of suffering, have not been well investigated. Accordingly, the two aims of this study were to describe the lived experiences of hospice patients, and to understand what their experiences can inform us about the concept of suffering. Seven hospice patients were interviewed between 2 and 12 times, with each interview lasting between 30 minutes and 2 hours. In each interview, the participants were asked to talk about whatever they wished. The conversations were tape-recorded, transcribed, and interpreted through a hermeneutic phenomenological analysis based on the existential philosophy of Martin Heidegger and the phenomenological approach described by van Marten. Through interpretation, five themes were identified in the lived experiences of the participants. First, the participants experienced a clear starting point of their illness experiences. Second, the participants experienced the deterioration of their body. Third, the participants experienced isolation, spatially-physically and relationally-socially. In addition, the participants also experienced existential-experiential isolation. Fourth, the participants experienced uncertainty in their everyday lives. And fifth, despite their physical deterioration, the participants experienced their existence as a Being with possibilities, rather than a Being with no future possibilities. The participants also identified several helpful and aggravating things in their everyday living. Based on the findings of this study, suffering was defined as a threat to the Understanding of Being, and the attributes of suffering found in the literature were reexamined. Also, this study revealed social, cultural, and institutional elements impacting hospice patients' lives. These were discussed in relation to the philosophy of Heidegger and Foucault. The strengths and limitations of the study, and the significant implications of the findings for further research, practice and education in nursing, were identified.

      • Perceived effects of block scheduling on agricultural education programs in Oklahoma

Mills, Jeffrey Brian Oklahoma State University 2002 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

Scope and method of study. The purpose of this study was to determine Oklahoma Agricultural Education teachers' perceptions of block scheduling and to examine its effects on secondary Agricultural Education programs in the state. Combinations of qualitative and quantitative methods were used to determine perceptions of Agricultural Education instructors toward block scheduling. The triangulation method was used to assist in eliminating bias relative to the qualitative nature of the study. Participants in the study were 51 Agricultural Educators in the State of Oklahoma currently on a block schedule. Each participant was mailed a short answer survey related to questions concerning their individual perceptions of the block schedule. Based on selected criteria, five Agricultural Educators were interviewed to determine their in-depth perceptions and attitudes toward a block Schedule. Findings and conclusions. Initially, fifty-five percent of the respondents indicated they were opposed to the block schedule. This initial response shifted to fifty-three percent agricultural instructors indicating they favored the block schedule over a traditional schedule, after experiencing the block schedule. The most significant impact of the block schedule was on the teaching strategies of Agricultural Educators. According to those interviewed, four out of five indicated they had adjusted their teaching styles to a more activity-based style of instruction. Three of the five indicated they were also utilizing more evaluation techniques in their daily instruction. Survey responses indicated the block schedule had caused a negative impact on student SAE projects. However, the interviews neither supported a positive nor a negative impact. Based on the survey information sixty percent of the programs had an increase in enrollment. In addition, four of the five Agricultural Educators interviewed indicated an increase in student enrollment.

      • Ubiquitin and Ubiquitin-Like Proteins in Cell Cycle Regulation

Mills, Christine A ProQuest Dissertations & Theses The University of 2018 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

Cell cycle is a tightly regulated process. The Cyclin F substrate, Nucleolar and Spindle Associated Protein 1 (NUSAP1), is a microtubule binding protein implicated in mitotic spindle stability and chromosome segregation, however, how it functions is unknown. I have identified a novel int. Cell cycle and metabolic regulation are critical to the growth and proliferation of normal cells, and these systems can be rewired in cancer to promote proliferation. Better understanding how these processes are integrated could provide key insi.

      • Holographic time gate investigations and confocal techniques

Mills, Kurt Douglas University of Michigan 2003 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

Image formation through scattering media is one of the most challenging problems of modern image science. This dissertation explores new ideas on two different approaches to this problem, photon migration and coherence optical sectioning. In the former, the aim is to transmit short coherence light through a highly scattering medium, such as thick biological tissue, separate that light that takes the shortest path through the medium, and use this so-called “first arriving” light to form an image of the structures embedded in the medium. In the second, light is either transmitted through or reflected from a thick medium, an imaging system is focused on a plane within the medium, and coherence methods are employed to reject light that is scattered by structures lying within the medium but outside the plane of interest. In the area of photon migration, the research reported here consisted of new photon migration methods and a new method of analysis, using a Fourier optics approach instead of the traditional methods, such as transport theory, which are quite complicated. The new analysis method predicts in a relatively simple way the resolution capabilities of the photon migration process as a function of the medium thickness, the mean-free-path of the photons between scattering events, and various other parameters. Computer simulation programs were developed to test the new imaging methods and to verify the correctness of the new theory. In the area of coherence optical sectioning, new methods were developed to achieve the optical sectioning, using light that is either spatially or temporally incoherent. A generalized analysis was made. Various system configurations were developed and experiments were carried out to produce optically-sectioned images using biological samples. Also, an analogy between two rather different imaging methods, synthetic aperture imaging, and confocal imaging was developed. In this analogy, confocal imaging was seen to be a limiting case of synthetic aperture imaging. All of the work was related in some degree to holography; for example, coherence confocal methods were produced by the process of low coherence image plane holography, and spectral holography was used to create a 3-dimensional surface map of reflective objects. Indeed, holography is the thread which ties all of the work together.

      • The effect of a deliberate psychological education model on the ego development, moral development, and sexual assertiveness of college women

Mills, Juliana J. H The College of William and Mary 2005 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

Sexuality is a key component of personality, development, and culture yet it is a domain often neglected in research in developmental theories. Research examining female sexuality is sparse and the sexual stories and experiences of college women are often ignored. Further, college women are faced with negative messages and double standards about sex roles and sexual expectations. Problems of alcohol abuse, sexual violence and coercion, sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies can impede cognitive, psychosocial, and emotional development. This study drew on cognitive development theory, specifically the domains of moral and ego development, to create and implement an undergraduate course examining female sexuality. The Deliberate Psychological Education model provided a framework for the course to promote development of moral reasoning, ego development, and sexual assertiveness. While the results indicated a positive impact from the experience of the class, there were no positive, statistical significance data on the outcome of the measures for the intervention group. This study provided a foundation for further research with this population.

      • From rugged to real: Stan Lee and the subversion of the American Monomyth in theological anthropology and Marvel superhero comics and films

Mills, Anthony R Fuller Theological Seminary, School of Theology 2011 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

This project explores what is sometimes referred to as the "American Monomyth," a specific archetype for heroic action unique to the United States and expressed in several of its cultural artifacts. It begins by surveying the broad historical, theological, and philosophical roots of this monomyth and their expression in early American literature, focusing especially on the anthropological positions evident therein. Chapter Two then discusses the monomyth's anthropology as manifested in early American superhero comic books from 1938--1961. Chapter Three turns to consider the pivotal shift in superheroic portrayals of the human inaugurated by Stan Lee and Marvel Comics in the early 1960s and still pertinent today. Specifically, heroes went from being independent to communal; certain to dubious; simple to complex; autonomous to accountable; and exclusive to tolerant. At the same time, many Christian theologians, even those from vastly different cultural backgrounds, were likewise challenging, and continue to challenge, traditional formulations of what it means to be human. In Chapter Four I attend to six key American thinkers who not only demonstrate relational anthropologies in their own formulations, but also criticize various aspects of the American monomyth. It would seem that as we move further into the twenty-first century, presentations of human personhood in American comic books and theology continue to share similar convictions and respond to mutual concerns. The recent films based on Marvel characters, like their printed source materials, continue to question traditional American conceptions of human personhood and offer alternatives. At the same time, the films offer unique expressions of the Marvel stories due both to the distinct medium of film and its role in American life and to differences in cultural concerns since the 1960s. This is the topic of Chapter Five. Finally, the Conclusion draws upon the insights of the last three chapters to offer four anthropological proposals toward a constructive alternative to the American monomyth.
