The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of picture storybook making activities with computer on children's storytelling ability and creativity. For the accomplishment of the purpose, the research questions were formulated as follows:
1. Will the picture storybook making activities with computer influence the children's storytelling ability (story structure, imagination, vocabulary, sentence structure)?
2. Will the picture storybook making activities with computer influence the children's creativity (fluency, flexibility, originality)?
3. What is the difference of the children's storytelling ability and creativity between the experimental group who used computer software and the comparison group who used paper and a pencil in the picture storybooks ?
Daegu were selected. Each class was designated as an experimental group and a comparison group. A total of 70 children participated in the eight-week program to examine the effectiveness of this model. The experimental design included a pre-test, treatment and post-test. The experimental group used computer software called ‘Stanley's Sticker Stories.’ The comparison group used paper and a pencil. Results from the test of storytelling ability test and creativity test.
Analysis of the data was conducted by using ANCOVA and T-test. The results of the study are as follows:
First, when it comes to storytelling, the experimental group was more enhanced than the comparison group. Also, the experimental group was more enhanced than the comparison group in terms of the sub-factors of storytelling ability, such as story structure, imagination, vocabulary, and sentence structure.
Second, the creativity of the experimental group was more enhanced than the comparison group.
Third, the experimental group demonstrated more imagination, sentence structure and originality than the comparison group in the picture storybooks.
Accordingly, it appeared that picture storybook making activities with computer was more effective than traditional picture storybook making activities in the study.
