The purpose of this study was to examine the state of Internet use of elementary school students and to find out the relationship between the over-use of Internet and aggressiveness and impulsivity.
The hypotheses of this study are as follows;
<Hypothesis Ⅰ> There are differences of aggressiveness scores between the over-use group and normal group.
<Hypothesis Ⅱ> There are differences of the impulsivity scores between the over-use group and normal group.
The subjects were 363 students of the 5th and the 6th grade at three elementary schools in Kong-ju. The instruments of this study were the questionnaire of the state of Internet use, over-use of Internet and aggressiveness inventory and impulsiveness inventory.
The data were analyzed by chi-square test, t-test and stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, the elementary school students mostly used Internet one hour or less a day in average at home. They mostly used Internet was to play a game and enjoy amusement, and were not interfered by their parents while making use of Internet.
Second, Internet use depending upon the subjects were as follows: The students made use of Internet excessively at academically poor children, longer daily use, and their parents' active controls on the use of Internet. The gender and Internet use place had not significant difference.
Third, the differences of aggressiveness depending upon Internet use was as follows: The differences of aggressiveness between the over-use group and normal group had significant difference (p< .001). In other words, the over-use group had higher physical aggressiveness, linguistic aggressiveness, indirect aggressiveness and negativity.
Fourth, the differences of the impulsivity depending upon Internet use was as follows: The differences of the impulsivity between the over-use group and normal group had significant difference (p< .001). In other words, the over-use group had higher cognition impulsivity, movement impulsivity and no plan impulsivity.
The study examined the effect of excessive Internet use on the aggressiveness and impulsivity of elementary school students to educate correct use of Internet, prevent excessive Internet use and develop a systematic program.
