Gwangju has been called Yehyang, Euihyang and Mihyang meaning a hometown of art, justice and beauty and has been a birthplace of Korean cultural art. Based on such resources and potentiality, Gwangju is going toward a culture-centered city which leads Asian culture through integrating energy and intelligence of Gwangju people.
For the purpose, its tradition to confirm identity, cultural heritage and archetype of historical background should be rehabilitated and preserved. And an environment to guarantee physical safety and mental health should be ensured. The basis to connect a city and its people is cultural tradition, which is traditional culture which the city has rooted in and has achieved.
At present, Gwangju city plan is based on the old town planned in Gwangju Eupsung period. Architectural cultural heritage is obsolete and much of it was removed by development projects due to city expansion .
This study aims to enhance the people's senses of pride through preservation of historical and cultural environment by Gwangju city government, and establish regional identity by maintaining, handing-down and developing the value of our traditional culture. For this, architectural cultural heritage that needs rehabilitation should be investigated so that the results can be used as basic data for city reorganization project.
The basic direction to activate city culture is to design more organized project to excavate characteristics of city culture and make them resources, and to establish a plan to preserve historical environment in the city development project beyond the cultural heritage preservation policy. A definite concept to preserve the whole region rather than a single piece of heritage should be prepared and for this, a plan for culture in the city project should be included. Cultural plan should be considered as one of sectional plans in the city project to achieve an effective city plan in which importance of culture is taken into account from the beginning. For the cultural plan, sufficient communication is necessary between the people to include both general and specific contents about our region.
City culture should be actively energetic, not a stuffed specimen. Therefore, historical and cultural environment should be preserved through organized management and rehabilitation reflecting individual regional characteristics.
It is expected that the identity of Gwangju city as a historic and cultural city will be established through the rehabilitation project of Gwangju Eupsung ; city environment will be qualitatively improved through city environment re-organization ; and by constructing the city orbital with an ambulatory axis, and by development with encouraging of the cultural industry, an ambulatory network system which connects it to open space will be constructed.
