      The major purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between extracurricular study, extracurricular stress, and school adjustment of elementary school children.
      The subjects were 463 fifth or sixth graders (male=246, female=225). They were extracted from eight different elementary schools in Changwon city. The Questionnaire of Extracurricular Study, the scale of extracurricular stress and School Adjustment Scale were administered to the subjects. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 12.0.
      The results were as follows :
      First, the result of analysis on the state of extracurricular study of elementary school students presented that most of the students have extracurricular study in private institution. In particular, specialized private institutions were used for English study, while comprehensive private institutions were used for Mathematics, Korean, Social study and Science. The hours of study according to the way of study was investigated. The result showed that extracurricular study of English and Mathematics were taken place in specialized private institutions for more than 4 hours which is statistically high while hours of extracurricular study on subjects of Korean, Social study or Science were about 3 hours at maximum taking place in comprehensive private institutions.
      Tn addition to this, most of elementary school students were taking extracurricular studies in English and Mathematics and hours of extracurricular study in English and Mathematics were statistically high compared to the hours of other subjects. Analysis on the hours of study based on the grade presented that students of 6th grade studied statistically more on English and Korean than 5th grade students.
      Second, Two extracurricular stress factors were extracted. The first factor was "Extracurricular studying load". The second factor was "Human relationship" such as relationship with extracurricular class loather, parents or friends.
      Third, showed positive correlation between the amount of extracurricular study (number of subjects or hour of study) and extracurricular stressor. And number of subjects had influence on extracurricular studying load stress as regression analysis result.
      Fourth, there were little correlation between the amount of extracurricular study (number of subjects or hour of study) and school adjustment. However extracurricular stress have negative correlation with school adjustment and the bigger extracurricular studying load stress was, the more negative effect it had on school adjustment.
      Based on the result of this study and discussion, the conclusion was reached as follow. Extracurricular study of elementary school students is becoming common trend. The main subjects are English and Mathematics and, usually, it takes place in a private institution. It suggests that the major social factors, the improvement of grade point and college entrance, applies to elementary school students. The level of extracurricular stress of elementary school students was not serious one as no statistical difference was found from the analysis of factors which are assumed by elementary school teachers to be related to the extracurricular stress. However, as more and more extracurricular study is taken and extracurricular stress could increase as the number of subjects and hours of study increase, it is required to control the amount of study and pay attention to whether students get stress or not.
      Also, students are receiving stress because of Extracurricular studying load which do not guess right in own studying level and this was grasped by causing negative effect to students' school adjustment. To reduce stress level caused by extracurricular study and to adjust well in school life, teachers are required to raise teaming motivations of children, have children get study in consideration of their learning attitudes, characters and correct level learning in student's each person's level. Curriculum in school has to be planed in consideration of the learning level of students and students are not to be evaluated just in terms of their scores in school. The extracurricular study by enforcement of parents won't be helpful to their children and cause them to have stress. To reduce the stress level caused by extracurricular study, parents have children get extracurricular study in consideration of development stage, aptitude and learning abilities and help their children to study by themselves. Thoughtful consideration and love of family and school to children and continuous studies are required to reduce the elementary school children' stress caused by extracurricular study
