The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of drawing mandala on elementary school students' self-Concept.
Kimhae-si 'J' elementary school forth grade students were chosen and divided into an experimental group(24 students) and a controlled group(24 students) as study objectives. After dividing them into test group of 24 and controlled group of 24, the preliminary test was taken through the test sheet for self-Concept. Then, test group carried out the drawing mandala everyday, 24 times for 2 weeks. The study adopted Lim Mi-eun (2003)'s Drawing Mandala program as a research tool.
The study adopted a self-Concept questionnaire, which Chung Won-Sik adapted and revised, Lee Kwang-Ghee modified as measurement tool to inspect Drawing Mandala effects. To examine Drawing Mandala effects, the study conducted two-way ANOVA to verify difference between the groups(experimental group and control group) and the inspection (preliminary inspection and post inspection) regarding overall changes of self-Concept as well as changes of each sub area.
In summary, the results of the study are:
First, the average of both experimental group and control group at self-Concept inspection had no difference before drawing mandala program, while the average of experimental group was higher than that of control group after the mandala program. This means that the drawing mandala is effective to improve affirmative self-Concept of elementary school student.
Second, in comparison with control group, experimental group applying drawing mandala showed statistically a significant difference in the sub-area of self-Concept such as physical self, personal self, academic self. However, social self and domestic self was slight the effect.
