The purpose of this study was investigate the difference of young children's mathematical achievement between experimental and comparison group, when integrated activities based on fairy tale books were applied to the experimental group. For the accomplishment of the above purpose, the research questions were formulated as follows:
1. How is influence of impact on the number concept in young children when the effects of integrated activities utilizing fairy tale books?
2. How is influence of impact on the classification and sequence in young children when the effects of integrated activities utilizing fairy tale books?
3. How is influence of impact on the geometry figure in young children when the effects of integrated activities utilizing fairy tale books?
4. How is influence of impact on the measurement in young children when the effects of integrated activities utilizing fairy tale books?
5. How is influence of impact on the problem solving in young children when the effects of integrated activities utilizing fairy tale boors?
The subjects of this study were 50 children of Y kindergarten and C kindergarten located In Iksan, JeonBuk, Korea.
25 children among 50 children were assigned to either the experimental or comparison group.
For the purpose of the before and the after test that the mathematical achievements test were used as research instruments.
The mathematical achievement test was originally constructed by the Psychological Corporation and then it was used by Lee Ki-Hyun(1995) through translation into Korean.
32 activities were composed by the present researcher and applied to the experimental group for the integrated activities based fairy tale books.
These related to the elements of concept for mathematics in young children such as: classification and sequence, number concept, measurement, geometry and figure, problem solving. Interesting mathematics activity which finds in the storybook that was written by Lim, Soo - Yang(2002) and the exact truth of integrated studies utilizing fairy tale book that was published by Oh, Young - Heui & Yang,Seung-Ji(2001) were used as sources to construct the contents of activity.
These contents were accomplished by children, during 6 weeks, 2 times a week, 20 minutes a day and the statistical technique employed for this study in the process of data analysis was t test between the experimental and comparison groups using SPSSWIN (version 10.0).
Result of this study were as follows:
In the mathematical achievements, experimental group integrated activities based fairy tale books were more enhanced than the comparison group.
Also, in all the sub-factors of the mathematical achievement, the experimental group integrated activities based fairy tale books were more enhanced than the comparison group in number concept, classification and sequence, geometry and figure, measurement, problem solving.
