This study is to investigate how much art activities using Caldecott Medal winning books influence the children's power of drawing expression and their drawing attitude. The purpose of this thesis is to recognize the importance of fairy tales and art activities in early childhood education.
The two main purpose of the study are as follows:
First, is the children's drawing attitude affected by art activities using Caldecott Medal winning books?
Second, is the children's power of drawing expression influenced by art activities using Caldecott Medal winning books?
In the course of this research, forty children of S nursery house and W nursery house in Jeon-ju were surveyed, and the results of experiments were analyzed. The subjects were divided into two groups, the control group and the experimental group, and participated in the experiment for five weeks. The children in the experimental group listened to the stories which received the Caldecott award, then they performed various art activities related to them. The children of the control group were exposed to the same tales in the class of story telling.
In this thesis, Shin, Young-jin's evaluative scale (1992), an amendment of Shin, Jeong-suk's scale (1989), were used to assess power of expression and drawing attitude. The experiment data is analyzed by ANOCOVA and T-Test.
The results of this study are as follows:
First, the children of the experimental group received higher scores in the test of the power of drawing expression, in such areas as contents, creativities, drawing techniques, comprehension and harmonious design, than those of the control group.
Second, there were no meaningful differences in their drawing attitude, in respect of attention, interest, confidence, sincerity and the esteem of works, between the experimental group and the control group.
