The purpose of this thesis was to find out the effectiveness of empirical group counseling program by Satir on 5th or 6th grader's self-esteem and interpersonal relationship. This established the following hypothesis to achieve the goal.
First, the group members who participated in this empirical group counseling by Satir would show improvement in terms of self-esteem compared to other members. Second, the group members who joined Satir empirical group counseling would achieve better interpersonal relations and have advantage on sub-elements including contentment, communication, trust, friendliness, openness, understanding, sensitivity.
To testify these hypothesis, this study has randomly chosen 18 children (9 people in each grade) in 5th, 6th grades out of 24 children who
presented low level of self-esteem and interpersonal relations, collected from 680 students in M elementary school, the city of Incheon. It conducted a pre-test for both groups, before taking the experiment treatment in order to confirm that both groups were homogeneous group, reconstructing 'Empirical Family Therapy of Song Sun Ja Jeong Moon Ja, Satir's 'Conjoint Family Therapy , and Han Sun Hwa
Noh Yeon Hee's program with expert's guide. This study operated the empirical group counseling program of Satir 8 times, taking 90 minutes each.
Testing materials to testify in this study were self-esteem questionnaire and interpersonal relations questionnaire. It examined the homogeneousness through pre-test between experiment group and control group, analysed the effects using SPSSWIN statistic program. It applied 2 X 2 Analysis of Variance with Repeated Measure as analysis method. The outcomes in this study are summarized as follows:
First, it presented that self-esteem was significantly improved in experiment group compared to control group (F=34.42, p<.01). Also, when it examined the experiment group, there were meaningful differences between pre-test and post-test (F=72.12, p<.01), and interactions as well (F=60.27, p<.01).
Second, as for interpersonal relations, it revealed that experiment group had achieved significantly meaningful improvement (F=40.86, p<.01). In addition, there was a meaningful difference between pre-test and post-test targeting experiment group (F=11.15, p<.01).
Further, there was interaction between the groups (F=14.79, p<.01). When investigating sub-elements of interpersonal relations, meaningful results were gained in communication, trust, understanding, friendliness. In case of contentment, there was a meaningful difference between the groups (F=10.90, p<.01), however, no significant outcome was found in other test. Openness showed that there were meaningful results between the groups (F=12.38, p<.01) and the groups inside (F= 7.42, p<.05), but no interaction (F=3.10, p>.05). No significance has been made in examining sensitivity.
Based on these results, it proved that this group counseling program by Satir made a good impact on the elementary schooler's self-esteem and interpersonal relations. Therefore, it is believed that this group counseling is useful for school teachers to perform a characteristic education or guidance.
However, it is expected that would be more effective way to proceed this counseling program after completing some professional training, and make counseling period a little longer than short-term period. Also, it is needed to follow the research on a counseling program targeting lower graders in elementary school.
