This paper has investigated the junior high school students' anxiety about math in their curriculum and how to overcome the problem. For this, the subjects of the study have been set up as follows:
First, the causes of the students' anxiety about math are individually examined. Second, to get over the problem, the additional lessons suitable for their level and skills were given to each student and the results were analyzed.
The population for this study included 41 junior high school students (7th, 8th, and 9th) in J private institute at Nowon-gu, Seoul. As preliminary study, their anxiety about math was examined. For this, the anxiety-about-math test questionnaire which was developed by Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development in 2000 was used, and the final test scores during 1st semester were adopted for the preliminary assessment of their performance.
Among the population, 7 students who were sorted out as uneasy students about math through the questionnaire and assessment test were given additional instructions fit for their level and ability based on sufficient discussion and thorough analysis on the result of the tests.
Based on the extracurriculum lesson (an hour a week) on the 7 restless students about math for 2 months since July 2004, the preliminary experimental group's average scores were as follows; hierarchy = 7.73, correlation = 10.29, math operation = 12.26, analysis·inference = 12.71. On the contrary, the post experimental group's average scores were hierarchy = 15.29, correlation = 20.43, math operation = 27.86, analysis·inference = 21.86. In other words, the preliminary experimental group failed to reach the low 30% limit of each cause of the math anxiety as shown in the appendix 3, norm table while the post experimental group succeeded. Furthermore, the consistency was also tested before and after the experiment. For this, χ^(2) distribution was used. It has turned out that χ^(2) = 44.619585, significance level: 0.05, and χ^(2) = 44.619585 > χ^(2)_(0.05)(3) = 7.815 provided that the degree of freedom was 3. Therefore, after the experiment, the experimental group's level of anxiety about math has turned out different from the value before the experiment. In other words, it's proved that the students' uneasiness about math has gone after experiment.
With regard to the assessment of performance, the figure which graphically compared the base score with standard score was used. Base on the diagram, the 7th grade students' scores were kept at a certain level or improved while the 9th grade students' scores were greatly improved. However, the 8th grade students got worse. Even so, there is limitation to generalize the findings due to too small population size.
Based on the results above, this paper can be summarized a s follows: First, the students' fear against math could be overcome by building up their confidence in math through the tailor-made lesson suitable for each student's level and capability. Second, based one-on-one and tailor-made lesson, the students who are lagging in math could be greatly improved. Third, when their fear against math is overcome, the students could have a confidence in themselves and enhance their attitude in class.
Due to the results above, this paper has limitations as follows: First, because of too small population size, the paper has failed to conduct the comparative analysis in terms of gender and grade. Therefore, further research should be made. Second, because this paper has limited the scope of anxiety about math to the aspect of relation only. The aspect of psychology should further be dealt with. Third, in case the assessment of students' performance is emphasized too much, they may lose their interest in math. Therefore, proper adjustment and balance should be made. Fourth, to get rid of the students' uneasiness and anxiety about math, more consistent and thorough research should further be made in wider fields of education. Besides, a tailor-made education program should be developed to properly diagnose and solve each student's problem.
