This thesis explores social characteristics of Korean horror films from a 'gender' perspective. 'Guyegie' films (literally ghost films in English), which disappeared in 1987, were revived by the film <Whispering Corridors> in 1998. Following the success of <Whispering Corridors>, two other films, <The Quiet Family> and <The Soul Guardians>, also flourished, and mainstream movie magazines announced the birth of the 'Korean horror film' as a new genre. Here, the concept of a genre needs close attention: most scholars tend to consider horror films as comprising a totally different genre than 'guyegie” films, due to the fact that 'guyegie' films prior to 1987 were stigmatized as ''out-of-date, boring or childish.'' Consequently, they attribute the success of Korean horror films to technological improvements, which made their quality comparable to foreign horror films, as well as to changes in the main consumers of horror films. This view basically carries two assumptions: one, 'guyegie' films do not appeal to young generations any more and the other, Korean horror films provide spectators with new satisfaction the same as Hollywood horror films do. However, these assumptions do not explain why a 'virgin ghost' character has still repeatedly appeared in both 'guyegie' films and horror films. If, borrowing from Freud, a horror film can be referred to as 'the return of the repressed', a woman as 'the repressed other'is no doubt a useful character to have in the films. Regarding my methodology, I conducted in-depth interviews with the producer of <Whispering Corridors> in 1998 and the director of <Memento Mori> in 1999 and <The Uninvited> in 2003, and analyzed texts through videos and scripts obtained from the <Korean Federation of Film Archives>, critical reviews in film magazines, and reviews by spectators on the internet. This thesis consists mainly of two parts: first, I examine the industrial institutional cultural infrastructure of Korean horror films in order to find out the characteristics of the Korean horror film as a genre since 1998. Through this, I intend to show why 'guyegie' films prior to 1987 had disappeared and then reappeared again in 1998. In addition, I look at the characteristics of Korean 'guisin'(ghost) films, which became the main model of Korean horror films between 1998 and 2004, as a genre by comparing them with slasher films massively produced in 2000. Second, I closely examine the changes in the social meanings of the 'yeoguie'(female ghost) concept, which has been presented as a typical monster character in Korean horror film through comparative textual analysis. This thesis aims to find out the causes of the revival of Korean horror films since 1998 by analyzing the characteristics of 'yeoguie'. In 'guyegie' films, 'guisin' used to be presented as a sympathetic character rather than a horrifying one, even though she was a monster. However, this familiarity with 'yeoguie' has turned to 'unfamiliarity',since she has returned as the repressed in horror films. Therefore, in this thesis I study how an immature young girl character creates 'uncanny' horror in Korean horror films. Through this, I intend to show how 'old-style guisin' still remains as a typical character in modern Korean horror films.
