In the Modern society, the spinal cord injured are rapidly increasing due to frequent occurrence of various industrial and automobile accidents caused by complication of the industrial structure and increase of traffic. When one's spinal cord is injured. it brings about paraplegia or quadriplegia which results in loss of motion and sensation. and one is faced with life of disabled and cannot conduct ordinary human activities. Most of the spinal cord injured are male adults who can perform labor or jobs and it is a natural result that sport participation should be performed so that these people can return to their home and society.
The purposes of this study was to manifest the influnce of the people with the spinal cord injury on how the individuals accepts their disability.
People with the spinal cord injury participated in this study. 137 participants responded to the questionnaire, consisting of the modified version of the acceptance of disability scale (Linkowski, 1969, 1988). Responses from 12 participants were excluded because of missing data, resulting in 125 participants. Statistics employed for data analyses were one-way ANOVA, t-test.
Based upon the results of this study, the following conclusions appear warranted:
First, participants age and income were found to have significant effects on their acceptance of disability.
Second, a characteristic of disability is not influence by acceptance of disability.
Third, participants with the spinal cord injury, while participating in sports, show positive acceptance of disability (De-Emphasis on Disability Salience, Compensatory Behavioral Qualities), when compared to non-participants.
Forth, competitive sport participants with the spinal cord injury have positive acceptance of their disabilities.
