The purpose of this study is to explore the professional identity focused on the relationship with in-service training and burn out among social workers in community welfare center in Seoul. While preceding studies identified the influencing factors of professional identity mainly, this study intended to identify relationship between professional identity and in-service training, and relationship between professional identity and job characteristics such as burn out empirically. In order to answer these questions, a survey was conducted on social workers in community welfare center in Seoul. Total 145 response were analysed in effect and major research findings are as follows.
First, the level of professional identity among social workers in community welfare center in Seoul was found to be relatively high(mean=3.45). Of the sub items of professional identity, sense of calling to the field were found to be the highest(3.70), and using the professional organization as a major referent was found to be the lowest(2.93).
Second, depending on the demography-statistical variables such as sex, marital status, education level, and career, significant mean difference of professional identity was found to exist. As a result of T-test, women than men, and the married than the unmarried were found to have higher professional identity. And as a result of One-way ANOVA, the master's degree acquired group and the group which employed over eight years were found to have the highest professional identity.
Third, depending on the demography-statistical variables such as education level and career, significant mean difference of burn-out was found to exist. The master's degree acquired group and the group which employed over eight years were found to experience burn-out the least.
Fourth, the relationship between professional identity and in-service training was found to be positive correlation. In other words, the result indicated that the higher one's participation, perception of necessity and need about in-service training, and interest of organization about in-service training predict the higher professional identity.
Finally, the relationship between professional identity and burn-out was found to be negative correlation. In other words, the result indicated that the higher one's professional identity predict the lower burn-out experience.
In conclusion, these findings suggest that in-service training to uplift professional identity needs to be promoted and professional identity to reduce burn-out needs to be established and intensified.
