영화의상의 표현성에 관한 연구 : 영화 <바람과 함께 사라지다>의 등장인물을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 복식이 갖고 있는 인간의 미의식을 다양한 미적 실험인 영화를 대상으로, 즉 영화<바람과 함께 사라지다>에 나타난 등장인물들의 다양한 영화 의상을 분석하고, 복식사적 측면 등을 분석하여 영화의상의 표현성을 알아보는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 영화사, 역사, 미술사, 복식사에 관련된 국내·외 문헌과 국내·외에서 이루어진 선행연구, 전문서적, 문헌 조사 연구와 영상자료를 병행하여 연구하였다.
1, 영화의상의 의의 및 기능을 정리하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 영화의상은 등장 인물의 신체 분장을 위해 배우에게 착용되는 모든 것을 말하는 것으로 작품 속의 사회·문화적 요소, 예술적 성격 및 등장인물의 심리적 기능을 표현하여 영화의 예술적 가치를 높이는데 의의를 둔다.
둘째, 영화의상의 기능은 역사적·시대적 기능, 상징적 기능, 유행 창조적 기능, 물리적 기능 등이 있으며, 배우들의 상호 역할의 특정한 활동범위와 관객들이 배우에게 기대하는 상징적 역할을 수행하여 영화에서 배우들의 성공적인 역할 수행을 돕는다
2. 영화의상의 표현적 요소는 디자인, 분장, 소품, 조명 등이 있으며 각각의 내용은 아래와 같다.
첫째, 영화의상은 형태(선), 색채, 재질이라는 디자인 요소로 극의 모든 상징성을 관객에게 전달시키는 시각적 언어로써 타 요소 즉, 분장, 소품, 조명 등과 조화를 이루어 조형적인 아름다움을 창조하여야 한다.
둘째, 분장은 배역의 이미지에 따라 배우의 개성과 시대, 계급, 보수적, 개방적, 계절성 등을 표현하는 요소로 메이크업과 헤어스타일의 다양한 연출로 배역의 이미지를 부각시킬 수 있다.
셋째, 소품은 시대적·문화적 암시와 배우의 개성을 나타내는 요소 및 인간의 표현 욕구를 위한 매개체로서 극의 완성도를 높여주는 중요한 역할을 한다.
넷째, 조명은 의상 재질이 갖는 고유의 색채와 재질 특성에 따른 빛의 반사·흡수에 따른 다양한 시각, 사실, 심미, 표현적 기능을 갖고 있으므로 조명아래에서 변하는 의상 색상 실험을 통하여 색채계획을 세워야 한다.
3. 영화의 복식 분석에 있어 영화 제작의 배경 및 작품설명, 등장인물별 복식, 영화의상의 복식사적 검토는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 1937년에 제작하여 1939년에 발표한 영화<바람과 함께 사라지다>는 제작 당시 미국의 대공황을 극복하기 위해 노력하는 시기로 남부를 배경으로 펼쳐지는 스카렛 오하라의 삶을 작품화한 본 영화를 통해 미국인이 지니고 있는 개척정신과 도전하는 미국인 자신들의 의지의 모습을 일깨워주고 있다는 데에 그 의미가 있다. 따라서 경제공황의 어려움 속에서 19세기의 남북전쟁을 통하여 재건의 의미를 부여하고, 미국문화를 보존하고 지지하는 미국 국민에게 희망을 주기 위한 사회적 분위기에서 만들어진 영화이다.
둘째, 영화의상의 표현성을 이해하기 위해 영화 <바람과 함께 사라지다>의 등장인물별 복식을 검토한 결과는 다음과 같다.
1) 스카렛은 외모가 뛰어나고 적극적인 성격으로 자신이 하고자 하는 일은 주변을 의식하지 않고 추진하는 진보적인 성향을 갖고 있는 인물이다.
전쟁 전에는 밝은 색상과 꽃무늬를 이용하여 젊고, 건강한 여성의 이미지와 즐거운 분위기를 표현하고 있다.
전쟁 중 상황에서는 전쟁중이라는 외부 환경적 요인에 의해 화려한 색상과 고급스러운 직물 보다 당시 보편화된 기하학적 무늬나 체크무늬, 실용적인 면직물 등을 이용하여 힘든 생활을 표현하면서도 스카렛의 개성을 살린 착장법으로 섹시하고 도전적인 이미지를 표현하였다.
전쟁 후 재건시기에는 사회 활동을 하는 여성으로서 선명한 색상의 드레스에 검정색 브레이드와 캡 소매 등을 이용하여 배우의 개성미와 세련미를 돋보이게 표현하였다. 특히 자카드직, 금색 장식, 기계주름 등은 스카렛이 기계문명의 혜택을 누릴 수 있는 계층임을 상징하고 의복구성에서는 귀족적인 취향을 표현하였다.
2) 멜라닌은 온화하고 부드러운 성격으로 신뢰성 있는 대인 관계를 유지하고, 전통적이고 보수적인 가치를 존중하며 문제 해결 능력에 있어 지혜로운 여성이다.
전쟁 전에는 밝은 색상과 러플 등을 이용하여 여성적이고 보수적인 이미지를 표현하고, 전쟁 중 상황에서는 어두운 색상과 체크무늬, 실용적인 면직물, 니트 등을 이용하여 서민적인 생활을 표현하면서도 멜라닌의 따뜻하고 단정한 이미지를 표현하였다. 전쟁 후에는 사회 활동에 적극적인 스카렛과 달리 당시의 대표적인 여성의 이미지를 나타내기 위해 주로 파랑색 계열 색상의 드레스에 레이스를 이용하여 합리적이고 지적인 이미지를 표현하였다.
3) 레터는 목적 의식이 분명하고 사랑이나 일에 대한 집착이 강하며 문화 생활에 대한 관심과 유행에 대한 관심이 높다.
전쟁 전에는 당시 남성들이 즐겨 입던 짙은색 프락에 밝은 색상의 질레을 착용하여 격조 있는 남성적 분위기가 나타났다. 전쟁 중 상황에서는 여전히 전통적인 예복, 밝은 질레와 슬랙스에 짙은색 재킷으로 심플하면서도 세련된 복장으로 전쟁에는 별 관심이 없는 복장을 보이고 있다. 전쟁 후에는 다양한 정장에서 도시적이고 세련된 감각 스타일을 보이고 때로는 실크 햇과 전통적인 예복 차림으로 클래식한 이미지를 표현하는 등 이전 보다 다양한 정장으로 생활의 변화를 느낄 수 있다.
4) 애쉴리는 레터에 비하여 부드럽지만 우유부단한 성격으로 전통적 가치와 사회적 규범을 존중하고 안정된 생활을 추구하는 인물이다.
전쟁 전에는 베이지색와 갈색의 부드러운 색상 조화로 낭만적인 분위기를 나타났고, 전쟁 중에는 군복으로 군인 신분을 표현하고, 전쟁 후에는 색상이나 실루엣 등에서 별다른 변화 없이 흰색 셔츠에 스트링 타이를 매고 클래식한 배색으로 보수적인 성향과 실용성을 강조하는 미국적인 요소가 보인다.
그 외에도 창녀 벨은 신분을 표현하기 위해 짙은 화장과 화려한 색상으로 사람들의 눈길을 끌었으며, 농장 감독관 슬레터리 및 흑인들도 전쟁 후 경제적 축적이 신분상징으로 이어져 신분에 관계없이 복식형태나 재질 및 색상에 구애 받지 않은 사회적 변화를 나타내었다.
셋째, 영화의상을 복식사적으로 검토한 결과 미국의 남북전쟁(1861∼1865)은 복식사적 측면에서 1850년에서 1870년대의 크리놀린스타일 시대에 속하지만 영화<바람과 함께 사라지다>는 남북전쟁을 배경으로 발발 전 미국 남부 사회의 분위기와 전쟁 중 혹독한 현실, 그리고 전쟁 후 재건에 이르기까지 로맨틱 스타일, 크리놀린 스타일, 버슬 스타일 등 극의 흐름에 따라 복식사적 고증에 의한 다양한 스타일로 시대적 배경과 사회적 분위기를 표현하였다.
전쟁 전 사회적 분위기를 표현하기 위하여 로맨틱 스타일로 작품의 시간적 흐름을 도울 뿐 만 아니라 화려한 의상으로 전쟁 중 어려움과 비교되어 상황에 따른 의상의 변화를 표현하였다. 특히 멜라닌의 로맨틱 스타일의 드레스는 역사적 고증과 함께 멜라닌의 보수적인 성향을 잘 표현한 반면 스카렛의 크리놀린 드레스는 스카렛이 유행에 민감하고 과감한 성격임을 표현하였다.
전쟁 중 하류계층의 경제적 축적이 신분상승으로 이어지면서 고급 재질이나 화려한 무늬의 직물은 신분에 관계없이 누구나 착용하는 것으로 시민풍의 복장이 정착해 가고 있음을 보여준다.
전쟁 후 스카렛은 경제적 회복으로 부와 권위를 상징하기 위하여 다양한 디테일과 화려한 옷감으로 특권층임을 표현하고, 역사적 스타일 즉 슬래쉬, 메디치칼라 등을 재현하여 표현하였다. 또한 패션 선도자인 이미지를 부각시키기 위하여 시대적으로 앞선 장신구를 이용하여 주변 인물들과의 차별화 시키고, 시간적 흐름을 표현하기 위하여 당시의 유행하는 버슬 스타일 드레스와 헤어스타일로 시대적 고증을 잘 반영하였다.
5. 본 영화의 복식을 분석한 자료를 토대로 정리하면 다음과 같다.
1) 영화 <바람과 함께 사라지다>는 미국의 남북 전쟁 이후 재건시기의 복식이 두드러지게 표현되어 영화의 주제가 전쟁이 아니라 전쟁이후 미국인에게 내일에 대한 희망과 도전의 메시지가 담긴 것을 알 수 있다.
2) 주요 등장 인물 4명의 서로 다른 성격 묘사와 함께 복식 수량적인 면에서 스카렛과 레터가 멜라닌과 애쉴리와 달리 다양한 복식으로 차별화를 둠으로써 관객으로 하여금 주연과 조연을 이해하는데 도움을 준다.
3) 전쟁 전·후의 사회·문화적 변화에 따른 스타일의 변화를 알 수 있다.
4) 영화의상에서 특정인물을 영화의 배경이 되는 시기보다 뒤지거나 앞 선 시대의 복식을 보이는 것은 인물 성격의 차이를 둔 것으로 해석되나 작품의 시간적 배경을 고려한 유행 경향이 결여되기도 했다.
5) 남북전쟁 이후 시민풍의 복장이 정착해 가고 있음을 보여주는 영화로서 다른 고전 영화와 달리 신분에 따른 재질의 변화를 스카렛 외에는 뚜렷하게 나타나지 않았다. 따라서 다른 등장 인물도 재질의 다양한 기능을 보강하여 사회·경제적 배경을 표현하는 노력이 요구된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The objective of the subject study is in examining expressions of film costumes by analyzing various film costumes of the characters in the movie "Gone with the wind", which is an experiment of an aesthetic sense, and analyzing the film costumes in terms of their historical aspect. Accordingly, I carried out research with the help of domestic and international books in connection with film history, history, art history and costume history and its previous research and technical book, along with material for film.
1. The following are the meaning and function of the film costumes.
First, the film costumes indicate every article the performer put on for a disguise of the characters. Such costumes play a role in expressing social, cultural and artistic characters in a piece of work and a psychological function of the characters to promote artistic value.
Secondly, there are historical, period, symbolic, fashion-creative and physical functions for the use of the film costumes. The costumes help the performer accomplish their successful roles by performing the specific scope in the mutual roles of the performer and the symbolic roles that can be expected by the audience.
2. The expressive elements of the film costumes are design, disguise, stage properties and lighting. The following relates to the foregoing
First, the film costumes are the elements of design such as shape (line), color and quality, which should create the formative beauty while harmonizing with elements such as disguise, stage properties and lighting as the visual language conveying all kinds of symbolism to the audience.
Second, a disguise is a factor that expresses a performer's individuality, the times, a class, conservativeness, openness and a nature of a season in accordance with the character's image and such a disguise brings out the character's image by the various representation of make-up and hair style.
Third, stage properties are a factor that shows the time and cultural intimation and the performer's individuality. Further, such stage properties are a medium for the expressional desire of a human being, which plays an important role to promote the completion of a play.
Fourth, stage lighting has visual, realistic, aesthetic and expressional functions in accordance with the reflection of light depending on the particular color and feature of a costume property. Therefore, a coloring plan is required through an experiment for the color of a costume that varies under the stage lighting.
3. The following are directed to a review on the production background of the film, interpretation of a play, the costumes by each character in the play and the history of fashion for the film costumes.
First, the film "Gone with the wind," which was produced in 1937 and released in 1939 represents the life of a Southern belle, Scarlet O'Hara, with its setting in the Old South during the Civil War, awake the American to the frontier spirit that the American are endowed with and their challenging willpower at the time of endeavor for overcoming The Great Panic of those days. As such, we could discover that the film arose from the social environment for evoking significance of reconstruction under the difficult circumstances of The Great Panic by turning a spotlight on the Civil War of the nineteenth century and for giving hope to the American who preserve and support their culture.
Second, there are results of a review on the costumes by the each character in the movie "Gone with the wind" in order to understand the feature of an expression on the film costumes as follows:
1) Scarlet is the character who has a distinguished figure with an active personality. She is a person with progressive ideas that she moves forward with a plan that she intends to achieve being indifferent to what others say about her.
Her costumes before the Civil War symbolize an image of a young and healthy woman and cheerful atmosphere by using bright colors and flower print.
Her costumes in the middle of the Civil War disclose a painful life by using geometrical and check patterns of cloth that were generally used at that time and practical cotton fabrics rather than using magnificent and luxurious fabrics for the cause of war that was an external environmental factor. At the same time, these costumes express a sexy and challenging image of her as marking her individual characteristics.
Her costumes after the Civil War, as it were the Reconstruction period, exhibit highlighted peculiarity and refinement of the actress by using black blades and capped sleeves in the vivid-colored dress for a woman of action in the society. Especially, jacquard, golden-colored decoration and machine pleats, etc. for the dresses symbolize that Scarlet belongs to a certain social stratum, who can be benefited by mechanical civilization. In addition, a costume constitution displays aristocratic taste.
2) Melanie is the character who is a gentle and honorable woman. She maintains reliable personal relationship with others and values traditional and conservative factors in life. In addition, she is a wise woman in solving problems.
Her costumes before the Civil War express her womanly and conservative image by using bright colors and ruffle in the dresses. Her costumes in the middle of the Civil War indicate the life of ordinary people by with using dark colors, check pattern, practical cotton fabrics and knit in the dresses. At the same time, these costumes disclose her warm and chaste image. Her costumes after the Civil War express a reasonable and intellectual image by using dress lace in a blue tone in order to show a representative image of that time contrary to the image of Scarlet who is eager for participating in the society.
3) Rhett is the character who has a strong sense of purpose, adheres to love and work and is highly interested in cultured modern life and vogue.
His costumes of dark frock and bright color of gilet before the Civil War display dignified manhood. His costumes of a traditional suit, bright color of gilet and slacks with a dark jacket in the middle of the Civil War are simple and refined, which show no interest on the Civil War. His costumes of various kinds of suits after the Civil War show an urban and refined sense of style. Sometimes these costumes comprise of silk hats and traditional suits which express a classic image. The change of life is sensed with these various suits than ever.
4) Ashley is the character who is gentler than Rhett, but is a man of indecision. He respects a traditional value and a social ethos, and pursues a stable life.
His costumes before the Civil War display romantic atmosphere by a gentle harmony of colors of beige and brown. His costumes in the middle of the Civil War are a military uniform that shows the standing of a soldier. His costumes after the Civil War exhibit the American factors for emphasizing a conservative feature and practicality with a string tie on a white shirt and classic coloring without a distinguished change in colors and silhouettes.
In addition, a prostitute Bell gets people's attention with heavy make-up and loud colored costumes in order to express her standing. Besides, we can see the change of society from the costumes of a farm inspector Slatery and the blacks, which do not care for a farm, property or color having nothing to do with a social standing, as their capital accumulation leads to the ascent of their social status.
Third, according to a review on the history of fashion for film costumes, the Civil War belongs to the time of a Crinoline style from 1850 to 1870 in aspect of fashion history. However, the movie "Gone with the wind" covers the social atmosphere of the South before the Civil War, the harsh reality in the middle of the Civil War and reconstruction after the Civil War. Accordingly, the movie featured various styles such as a romantic style, a crinoline style and a bustle style, etc. by a historical research on the costumes in accordance with the flow of the play and thus expressed a social background and a social atmosphere.
In order to express the social atmosphere before the Civil War, the costumes displayed a romantic style and thus indicated a time flow of the play. Further, the costumes of a luxurious romantic style were compared with the difficult circumstances during the Civil War. As such, the change of the costumes in accordance with the time and circumstances was expressed. Especially, a romantic style of a dress for Melanie expresses enough about the conservative characteristics of Melanie along with historical research, while a crinoline dress of Scarlet indicates that she is keen to a trend and is a decisive person.
A capital accumulation by the lower classes led to the ascent of their social status in the middle of the Civil War. This phenomenon let the lower classes to use fabrics of luxurious quality and magnificent patterns for their clothing regardless of the social status. Such change shows the settlement for a civil style of clothes.
After the Civil War, in order to symbolize wealth and dignity in accordance with economic restoration, the costumes of Scarlet used all kinds of details and splendid fabrics and reemerge historical styles such as slash, medici collar, etc. and thus expressed the privileged social stratum. Furthermore, in order to bring about a fashion-leading image, the differentiation from the characters of Scarlet was made by using accessories of being ahead of the times. Further, in order to express a time flow, the costumes reflected historical research using the bustle style of dresses and hairstyles.
5. The following are the findings of analyzing the present film costumes.
1) The highlighted expression of the Reconstruction period after the Civil War on the present film costumes hints that the subject of the film is not a war but a hope and a challenge toward tomorrow.
2) The costumes describe the different individuality of 4 main characters. Further, such costumes help the audience understand the main characters and supporting actors and actresses by differentiating the costumes of Scarlet and Rhett that are various from those of Melanie and Ashley.
3) The costumes indicate the changes of style according to social and cultural changes before and after the Civil War.
4) Disclosing fashions of behind and ahead of the time for a background of the film in the costumes of a certain character is interpreted as settling the characteristic difference but that can be interpreted as showing insufficient understanding about a background of the film.
5) The present film discloses the settlement for a civil style of clothes after the Civil War, not clearly expressing the change for the quality of clothes according to the social status except for the case of Scarlet to the contrary of the other normal classic movies. Therefore, the costumes are much in need of expressing a social and economic background by fortifying the various functions of the quality of clothes in other characters' costumes.
