The purpose of this study was to make a comparative analysis of how students and parents perceived the qualifications and roles of homeroom teachers in elementary school in a bid to suggest in wch way would- be teachers should be educated and how teachers should improve them-selves.
The research questions were posed as below :
1. Do students and parents have different expectations for the characteristics and qualifications of teachers?
2. Do students and parents have different expectations for teacher roles?
The subjects in this study were 950 students and 763 parents from five elementary schools in the city of Gangneung, on whom a survey was conducted to find out what they expected from homeroom teachers. For data handling, x^(2)(Chi-square) test and ratio analysis were employed.
The findings of the study were as follows :
First, as for the personal characteristics and qualities of homeroom teachers, the largest number of the parents investigated didn't care about homeroom teacher gender, and the students investigated preferred female teachers. The two groups had different preferences for teacher age, but both groups wanted homeroom teachers to treat children in a friendly and affectionate way, and they were also hoped to be well experienced and make their instruction easy to understand. Regarding personality, the students were more fond of cheerful and humorous teachers, and the parents had a higher liking for those who treated every student impartially.
Second, concerning academic guidance, one of teacher roles, both groups wanted regular teachers to help students understand their classes and assist them to study on their own. Namely, they preferred autonomous teaching methods to typical teacher-led expository one. As to evaluation, homeroom teachers were wanted to offer feedback to both students and parents, and to encourage each student to concentrate on his or her studies. As for assignments, the types of assignments that could fix academic deficiencies or enrich learning without putting pressure on students were favored.
Third, regarding guidance, one of teacher roles, both of the student and parent groups were most fond of teachers who separately exhorted children who did wrong not to do that again. And a lot of them didn't think that it's advisable to show favoritism even to good students in front of others, though whether or not they did that privately didn't matter. Teachers should be considerate without putting strain on students, and focus on helping students build up their characters. Contrary to the findings of earlier studies, a lot of them believed corporal punishment was necessary in some cases. And they wanted homeroom teachers to inflict corporal punishment if necessary so that children could be guided in the right direction, and this fact implied that they put confidence in teachers and left school education to them.
Fourth, in regard to classroom management, both of the student and parent groups were most fond of those who taught children to be upright. And those who discussed every classroom matter with students were preferred. In the past, it had been considered advisable to write down only the strengths of students in report cards, but they wanted teachers to inform both merits and demerits of students. The parents hoped them to provide special after-school guidance to underachieving students, whereas the students wanted them to offer special after-school education and create the conditions for the development of self-directed learning capability at the same time. It's required to carefully consider how underachieving students could be encouraged without stimulating their inferiority complex.
Fifth, as to interpersonal relationship, one of teacher roles, the students had a higher liking for those who treated them warmly, and the parents expected teachers to treat every student with impartiality. Concerning the way of getting closer to students, the two groups had a different opinion about that, as the students expected them to mingle with them, while the parents wanted them to have a more talk with their children. Both groups wanted them to share opinions about school attitude and interpersonal relations when they met the parents. The students wanted to consult with their parents about any troubles they had, and the parents also wanted their children to discuss with them. The students didn't prefer teachers as counselors. Teachers should put more efforts into treating students with affection and kindness and creating sympathetic climate to make themselves more accessible.
The above-mentioned findings illustrated that the students and parents had both similar and different expectations for regular teachers. Teachers should strive to satisfy their needs and help them understand their view of education.
