(The Lord of the Rings)이 중세의 문학으로부터 물려받은 유산과 함께 현대의 작품으로서 가지는 현대성을 분석하고, 현실에 존재하지 않는 환상의 세계를 다룬 이 작품이 현대의 독자들에게 어떤 방식으로 다가가는가에 관하여 논의한다.

This thesis interprets J. R. R. Tolkien''s The Lord of the Rings, focusing both on the factors that are handed down from medieval literature and on modern characteristics which the work is endowed with. It also discusses how the work deals with a fantasy world. The Rings assumes that its temporal dimension, the Third Age, precedes the history of humankind as we know it, and Tolkien tries to give the impression that the narrator is actually writing a history related to the Third Age, by adding various supplementary materials to the main plot (chronicles, maps, languages, etc.). However, the story cannot help being a fantasy to modern readers because they are aware of the fact that Middle-earth did not exist in reality.Tolkien creates Middle-earth because he believes that the English people needed a mythology. He thought that England had been deprived of much of its Anglo-Saxon mythology by the Normans. A notable Anglo-Saxon scholar, Tolkien was also interested in re-creating languages of the period. The Rings is influenced by both medieval romance and medieval epic. It is closer to romance in Book One, but as the story goes on, it shifts to epic, in which almost every episode or event―either a war or a quest―has rational motivation. Tolkien offers the readers the materials that make his 'Secondary World' look rational and real at least in the text. As the characters continually experience the actualization of myths and legends, the readers go through a similar experience while reading the work. This is possible only within the text because Tolkien wants his world to have the inner consistency of reality, and thus, he creates his story to be almost as real as actual history.Tolkien said that his work was not allegorical, but he admitted that an allegorical interpretation could be applicable to the narrative. The evil which Tolkien describes as the absence of the good is based on the view of St. Augustine. It reflects Tolkien''s interpretation of the harsh reality which his age had been confronting through the two World Wars. The Ring itself is power, and such absolute power inevitably corrupts. Therefore the very enemy whom Frodo has to overcome is the growing desire in himself for the Ring.Tolkien presents Escape, Recovery and Consolation as the main effects of Fantasy. His world is not utopian; there is an apocalyptic anxiety in Middle-earth. Happiness and hope come only after the Ring has been destroyed, and the happy moment is only temporary. Tolkien is aware of reality as tragic as his age witnessed. It is true that Middle-earth is not an empirical but a fantasy world. Nevertheless, if in the fantasy world of The Rings, modern readers can find some meaning available to them in the real world, The Lord of the Rings belongs to the significant realm of the modern literature.
