The purpose of this study is provide a basis for development and operation of science education program and teacher education in kindergarten. For the purpose, questionnaire survey was carried out over kindergarten teacher and the results was summarized as follows:
First, the kindergarten teachers believe that kindergarten science education is very important and the goal is to make children inquiries natural environment and development of creative ability.
Second, science education curriculum was organized by teacher themselves. They reconstruct the curriculum to suit their kindergarten situation based on the monthly journal of education and material of education activity.
Third, science education contain biology, phisics, environment and chemical change. Teachers regard chemical change as most difficult area. The scientific activities were carried out by experiment and observation, and large group activity was frequently used. The experiment depend on commercial program which carried out once a week. The teachers Had difficulties in teaching new theory and the lack of expert knowledge.
Fourth, many kindergartens (public : 97%, privite : 43%) have a separated science section. However, they actually didn't pay much attention to science education because of the shortage of material and science knowledge. The teaching materials and aids were purchased at shop largely and some of them were made by teacher.
Finally, 71% of private kindergartens and 14 % of public kindergartens carry out comercial science program once a week. The cost of the program is about 5,000 won per month and most teacher thought the program was helpful.
In conclusion, although teacher thought science education in kindergarten is very important, actually science curriculum could not be carried out appropriately because teachers had the lack of expert knowledge of science and shortage of materials. Based on this results, I suggest the followings:
1. To get expert knowledge of science, a lot of education and training programs should be provided to kindergarten teachers.
2. Science education curriculum for children should be reinforced in college or university.
3. License system should be established for expert of science education and kindergarten have to employ the expert.
4. Government should support financially for science education in kindergarten.
