The purpose of this study is to examine the recognition and the state of the economic education for young children in the kindergartens. The topics of this study are as follows:
1. What do teachers think about the necessity of the economic education for young children?
2. What are the contents and the teaching methods of the education?
3. What are the teaching and reference materials for the education and how do teachers guide parents in home economic education for young children?
4. What is more needed for the effective and successful economic education for young children?
The sample consisted of 151 teachers in the private and the public kindergartens in the Jeonbuk province except in the outskirts of the six cities (Jeonju, Kunsan, Iksan, Jeonguep, Namwon, Kimje) in the province. They were surveyed by the questionnaires made by Younkyoung Lee and Jungsim Kim and the collected data were analyzed by such statistical methods as the frequency and the percentage.
The results of this study are as follows:
1. The teachers recognized the necessity of the economic education for young children very strongly and pointed out the reason for the economic education as the acquisition of the self-regulation and social skills for young children in the daily lives. Also they responded the concepts of purchase and selling and markets as the most important contents.
2. The most contents and teaching methods which were taught and used by teachers In the classroom were the contents about the purchase/sell and the husbandry and sociodramatic play and story telling and discussion. Also there were the significant differences among the contents and teaching methods according to variables such as the kindergarten foundation type, kindergarten location, teachers' academic career, educational career and age.
3. Teachers' most favorite material for the education is the educational activities material and their most favorite guide method of home economic education is to send parents the correspondences including some educational materials for parents.
4. The teacher pointed out the shortage of teaching materials for economic education, the ignorance of the effective contents and teaching methods for young children and the shortage of teachers' understanding and knowledge about economics as the obstacles for planning and teaching the economic activities.
