The purpose of this study was to examine whether preschoolers made any progress in mathematical concept by keeping a math journal through various types of easy-to-understand cultural approaches and to analyze what sorts of mathematical representations were found in their journals. It's ultimately meant to delve into how young children could successfully be exhorted to keep a journal in a more authentic and active manner in an effort to help kindergartens see journal keeping in new light.
The subjects in this study were 40 preschoolers from C and O kindergartens in a rural community in the city of Buyeo, south Chungcheong province, who were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group kept journals for six weeks, from the third week of March through the fourth week of April 2003, two or three times a week. The control group was exposed only to routine programs as usual.
The research questions and hypothesis were posed as below:
Research Question 1. Does keeping a mathematical journal by cultural approaches make any positive differences to young children's mathematical concept?
Hypothesis 1. Preschoolers who keep mathematical journals through cultural approaches might get higher marks in the concepts of classification, order, number, space and measurement than others who don't.
Research Question 2. Do young children's exposure to cultural approaches associated with mathematical concepts bring about any changes to their mathematical representations?
After a pretest was conducted, the experiment was carried out, and then a post-test was implemented. Jeong Hui-dal(1990)'s reorganized version of Piaget's task was employed both in the pretest and post-test. When the pretest results were analyzed by ANOVA to see if the experimental and control groups were homogeneous, the two groups turned out to be homogeneous at the (019 level of significance). After the experiment was fulfilled, post-test was conducted in the same manner as the pretest, and X^(2) test and t-test were implemented to identify the effect of the experiment.
To find out the young children's mathematical concepts and representations, the collected data about 14 activities were separately analyzed, and how often they succeeded or failed was measured. In addition, how many children showed the same type of representation was gauged, and their percentage was calculated.
The findings of this study were as follows:
1. The preschoolers improved in mathematical concepts when they kept math journals by being exposed to the types of cultural approaches that could stimulate their curiosity and draw their attention.
There appeared significant changes only in the concept of measurement, after their concepts of classification, order, number and space were all tested. Overall, however, the experiment made a significant difference at the .013 level of significance to their math concepts.
2. As the children were engaged in three activities related to the concept of classification, 90.0 percent of the young children understood that concept. Among those who succeeded in simple button classification, 37.5 percent depended on colors and 31.3 percent relied on sizes.
82.0 percent made out the concept of order after undergoing two relevant activities, and regarding the concept of pattern, AABB pattern was most common, which was used by 31.5 percent.
In regard to activities using the shape of numbers, 80.0 percent utilized pictures and letters. When working out numbers, 44.4 percent used pictures and letters, and the other three children(16.7%) did something like graffiti.
Concerning the concept of space, 85.0 percent employed a variety of spatial vocabulary. In the event of shape-based spatial representation, familiar things around them were the major targets of representation, as things accounted for 27.8 percent, followed by figures(22.2%) and pictures(16.7%).
In the case of the concept of measurement, they found the relevant activities more curious and interesting than before, and made a serious discussion. When measuring a length, 40.0 percent, the largest group, used their span, and 20.0 percent employed colored pencils.
