The purpose of this study is to resolve the fear and difficulties that advanced high school students face when they solve math problems. We have chosen trigonometric function as our study topic as it is considered to be the most difficult subject by students. In order to achieve the goal of the study, we used the method of case study. Then we set up two study topics as follows:
1. What are the main errors that advanced students make in the process of solving trigonometric function problems?
2. What are the causes of the difficulties they face in problem solving? Then in what ways they can be helped out of these difficulties?
We selected six volunteers among the advanced students from S high school in Seoul for this study. We prepared a test consisting of 8 problems which are suitable for our study purpose. Each page had only one problem from which the student was to produce a written protocol.
For the first study topic, students were directed not to erase anything in the process and to solve problems for enough time. After the test we found out errors of each problem from the examination paper.
For the second one, we interviewed with each student, recording on VCR. Meaningful parts of the interview are quoted in the conclusion. By analyzing them, we found what causes difficulties students are faced with in solving trigonometric function. In addition, we looked for what teaching methods should be used to help them solve math problems well.
The following conclusions were drawn based on the study results.
First, teachers should be an expert in errors that students make. Also, they actively encourage students to correct their errors.
Second, teachers should teach students in such a way that they can draw not only the basic graph but also a graph with a domain. Also a teacher should help students to become accustomed to graphs and not to be afraid of them through much practice.
Third, a teacher should not unilaterally teach students math concepts but rather should give them a chance to explain it on their own. Also, a teacher should provide problems that can help students understand these concepts well and teach them the importance of math concepts.
Fourth, when students make a calculation mistake, a teacher should actively review the reason for the mistake and discuss it with the students.
