과학자에 대한 초등학교 3학년과 5학년 학생들의 생각과 원인 분석 = (The) Analysis of the ideas and the sources of their ideas about the images of the scientist in elementary school

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 과학자에 대한 초등학생들의 생각과 원인을 분석하기 위해 서울지역에 있는 S초등학교 3학년과 5학년 144명을 대상으로 DAST, 과학자에 대한 정신적 표상 검사와 면담을 실시하여 과학자에 대한 이미지, 과학자가 하는 일, 과학자의 직업과 진로 희망, 과학의 산물에 대한 생각과 원인을 알아보았다.
연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, DAST을 통한 과학자의 이미지는 대부분 실내에서 남자 혼자서 일하는 모습이었다. 또, 3학년 아동들은 DAST에서 자기 자신과 비슷한 모습으로, 5학년은 괴상하고 비정상적인 모습으로 많이 나타내었다. 그리고 과학자에 대한 정신적 표상은 학년, 성별에 관계없이 대체로 과학자에 대해 긍정적인 이미지를 나타내었다.
둘째, 면담을 통한 과학자의 이미지는 과학자의 역할을 잘 수행하기 위해서는 과학자의 외모나 일하는 환경, 성격의 특징이 있다고 생각하고 대개 긍정적인 이미지를 나타내고 있다.
셋째, 면담을 통한 과학자가 하는 일에 대해 공통된 응답은 발명, 실험, 연구, 개발이라고 하였다. 그 이유로 인류의 편리한 생활이나 평화 등을 언급하였다.
넷째, 면담을 통한 과학자에 대한 직업과 진로희망에 대해 부정적 반응이 많았다. 그 이유는 과학자는 자신의 꿈과 다르고, 돈을 버는 일과 관계가 적고, 다른 직업을 가진 사람도 과학자와 마찬가지로 중요하기 때문이라고 하였다. 그리고 대체로 남학생보다 여학생들이 좀더 부정적이었다. 또, 과학자라면 하고 싶은 연구에 대해 발명, 과학실험, 환경 개선 등을 언급하였다. 그 이유로 대부분이 자신의 희망이나 관심 분야에 대해 과학실험이나 발명을 통해 연구해보고 싶다고 하였다.
다섯째, 면담을 통한 과학의 산물에 대한 초등학생들의 생각은 사람들의 생활을 유익하고 편리하게 해주는 컴퓨터, 로봇, 우주 개발에 대해서는 매우 긍정적인 반응을 보인 반면에, 전쟁의 위험이나 사회 혼란을 초래하는 복제, 핵무기의 개발에 대해서는 부정적 반응이 많았다. 이것은 과학자의 역할이 우리 사회에 많은 영향을 끼치고 매우 중요함을 의미한다.
초등학생들은 과학자에 대해 대부분이 긍정적 이미지를 나타내지만, 고학년으로 올라갈수록 정형화된 과학자의 이미지를 나타내고 있으므로 초등학교에서의 과학교육을 통해 과학자에 대한 이미지를 개선시키기 위한 노력이 필요하다. 또, 초등학생들은 과학자의 직업과 진로희망에 대해 약간 부정적인 반응이 많으나, 과학자는 나라를 위해 큰 일을 할 수 있는 매우 중요한 사람으로 인식하고 있어서 국가의 발전과 미래를 위해 과학자의 육성에 힘써야 함을 시사하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this thesis, which is based on the 144 students who are in the 3rd and 5th grade in S elementary school located in Seoul city, is to analyze students ideas and the sources of their ideas about the images of the scientist through the DAST(Draw-A-Scientist Test, DAST), mental image tests of the scientist and interviews, and I study their images of scientist, things that scientist do, scientist as a job and students wishes to be a scientist, and their ideas and the sources of their ideas about the products of the science.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, the images of the scientist appeared in the DAST were mostly mans image who works alone in the room. In addition, the students in the 3rd grade mostly drew the images of the scientist which reflect on themselves, and the students in the 5th grade drew the images of the scientist in a strange and abnormal figure. Moreover, they generally had positive images about the mental images of the scientist regardless of their grade and sex.
Secondly, if I explain students images of the scientist appeared in the interviews, I realize that they thought scientists had a special feature in their appearance, in their working environment and character, and that most of students had a positive image about the scientist.
Thirdly, the common responses about the work of the scientist appeared in the interviews were invention, a scientific experiment, research and development. And the reason why they chose those things was that those things could allow human beings a more comfortable and peaceful life.
Fourthly, there were many negative responses about scientist when they were asked to be a scientist or to choose a scientist as their future job. The reason why they said negatively about the scientist was that to be a scientist was not their goal, and that scientist had nothing to do with earning money, and that the people who would work for another job might be also an important person like scientist. Generally, girls were more negative than boys. And for the question of their wishes based on the presupposition that students pretended to be scientists, they answered that their favorite wishes would be a scientific invention, a scientific experiment and the development of the environment. The reason why they wished to work for those things was that they wanted to study about a scientific experiment and invention, which were their hope and major concern.
Fifthly, students ideas about the products of the science during the interviews were very positive about the computer, robot and space development which could allow human beings a beneficial and comfortable life, on the other hand, they mostly had a negative point of view about the cloning and the development of the nuclear weapon which would bring about the horror of the war and social unrest. These results indicate that the role of the scientist has a great influence on our society and that the role of the scientist is also important.
Most of elementary school students have a positive point of view about the scientist, but because students have more stereotyped images of scientist as their school year goes up, so we need to make efforts to improve students images of the scientist through a science education in the elementary school. Moreover, many elementary school students have, somehow, negative ideas not to be a scientist and choose the scientist as their future job, but since they recognize the scientist as a very important person who can work for our country, it indicates that we have to do our best to bring up the scientist for the development and future of our country
