The purpose of this study was to examine how elementary school children and teachers looked at children's rights, to what extent children were satisfied with school life and how children's perception of their own rights was related to their satisfaction with school life. The research questions were posed as below:
1. How do children and teachers perceive children's rights?
2. How much do children find their school life satisfactory?
3. What is the relationship of children's perception of their own rights to their satisfaction with school life?
The subjects in this study were 282 fifth and sixth graders and 188 teachers who were randomly selected from public elementary schools in Gyeonggi province. A survey was conducted with questionnaires that separately covered their awareness of children's rights and the children's satisfaction with school life. For data handling, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test and correlational analysis were employed.
The major findings of this study were as follows:
First, both children and teacher groups investigated were highly aware of children's rights. In the case of the children, all the variables(school year, school grades and experience of serving as class representatives), except gender, made a significant difference to their perception. Among the teachers, individual variables, including gender, career and training experience in children's rights, made no significant difference to their awareness of children's rights. The teachers were cognizant of children's rights slightly more than the children, and the gap between the two groups was significant.
Second, regarding the children's satisfaction with school life, they expressed high satisfaction with school life, which was above the average, and among the individual variables, their satisfaction level was significantly different according to school year and school grades.
Third, there was weak positive correlation between the children's overall perception of their rights and their overall school-life satisfaction. Namely, those who were more cognizant of their own rights were relatively better satisfied with their school lives.
There might be different factors to affect children's satisfaction with school life, and children's awareness of their own rights gave some impact on that. This fact implied that in order to find school life more satisfactory, they should know what rights they are entitled to assert and what they have to do to ensure their own rights. Both children and teachers should wake up to children's rights and try to guarantee them, and higher awareness of children's rights is expected to lead to better school life.
