The main purpose of this study is to examine how pupils perceive their teachers' and parents' attitude toward them, and to find out the relationship between the perceived teachers' or parents' attitude and the pupils' school adjustment.
For carrying out this study, the subjects were randomly extracted from 4th and 6th graders in 7 elementary schools in Changwon, Gimhae and Milyang areas. They were total 321 students( 4th graders: 151, 6th graders: 170, female: 160, male: 161).
In order to examine pupils' perception of teachers' and parents' attitude and their school adjustment, 3 measurement tools were used: 1) questionnaire of teachers' attitude 2) questionnaire of parents' attitude 3) questionnaire of school adjustment For the questionnaire of teachers' and parents' attitude toward pupils, perceived teachers' and parents' concerns for pupils' personal interests, competence, and personality were asked as subcategories. For the questionnaire of school adjustment, the relationship among classmates and among teachers, the participation in study activities and in school activities were included as subordinates.
To analyse the result of the study, SPSS program was utilized. For the output of basic statistics, mean scores and standard deviation of each item were identified. And then, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis were done on the data.
Through the process of the research and analysis, the results can be summarized as follows:
First, pupils, in general, perceived their teachers' attitude toward them positively. And girls accepted their teachers' attitude more positively than boys. 6th graders' perception of the teachers' attitude, especially in the personal interests was more positive than that of 4th graders. And the pupils in financially rich families had more positive perception.
Second, pupils, in general, perceived their parents' attitude toward them positively. Girls' perception of their mothers' attitude was more positive than boys', in the all subordinates of the questionnaire. And girls' perception of their fathers' attitude was more positive only in the two subordinates: personal interests and competence. The pupils who live in the Dong areas perceived their mothers' attitude more positively than ones in Myun areas. And the pupils in order of their family's financial status such as upper, middle and lower classes had more positive perception.
Third, examining into the pupils' school adjustment, they adjusted to school life fairly well including 4 subordinates: the relationship among classmates and among teachers, the participation in study activities and in school activities. There were little differences of school adjustment between 4th graders and 6th graders. But, girls adjusted to school life better than boys. And pupils in Dong areas adjusted to school life, except study activities, better than ones in Myun areas. Also, the pupils in order of their family's financial status such as upper, middle and lower classes adjusted to school life better, except school activities.
Fourth, as pupils perceive teachers' attitude toward them positively, they adjusted to school life better. In other words, there is significant positive correlation between pupils' perception of teachers' attitude and school adjustment.
Finally, as pupils perceive parents' attitude toward them positively, they adjusted to school life better. In other words, there is also positive correlation between pupils' perception of parents' attitude and school adjustment.
