In this study, I attempted to clarify Paul Ce´zanne's efforts to identify nature's essential attributes and laws rather than just to reproduce objects as they appear. (Ce´zanne started his career as an artist with dark and strong tones, but turned his painting style into bright tones under the influence of Camille Pissaro in the middle 1870s. He still adhered to the Nicolas Poussin-led classicism that had a tendency to reproduce objects truthfully, but at the same time pursued the modernistic impressionism that focused on the 2-dimensional flatness.
He once told that he would make the impressionism solid and lasting like paintings displayed in the art gallery, thus expressing his rather paradoxical status of pursuing both the impressionism's nature and the classicism's art. He would give the dynamics to the canvas by relating shapes with colors while stressing the autonomy of the canvas. Like his statement that paintings were products resulting logically from all things that the painters view, he tried to modify visual senses through mental eyes for composition of paintings. Such efforts were continued by using nature as a motive and trying to expose nature's invisible essence. In a paper titled the 'Ce´zanne's doubt'(La doute de Ce´zanne), Maurice Merleau-Ponty pointed out the fact that what Ce´zanne tried to express on the canvas was the fundamental perceptional relations between the man and the world. His question was about what process could make an object exist in the 'field of perception'. In the 'field of perception' only containing nature and his own view, he made continuous attempts to explore a world enabling whole personality-level interactions.
Ce´zanne tried to bring nature to his works, but his goal was to identify real existences of objects in nature, not just to imitate them as they appear. In Maurice Merleau-Ponty's terms, what he tried to express was not simple appearances of objects but an 'invisible world' hidden in a 'visible world' which can be embodied by perceptional experiences. Ce´zanne's artistic value lies in the fact that the intended to return to nature itself and express its various aspects that present themselves in our primitive experiences. That is, nature that he focused upon was a primitive nature as the basis for our lives. By his definition, paintings are works that make the world staying invisible to our daily eyesight visible. The contrast between the 'visible' and 'invisible' worlds was what Merleau-Ponty's later thoughts had revolved around. He intended to clarify such two worlds' interrelations through discussions about paintings. In his studies on Ce´zanne's paintings, Merleau-Ponty sought to show the fact that actually existed beings are nothing other than primitive contacts between the man and nature and that painters set free the meanings of objects projected to their eyesight through pictorial expressions that mean the 'voluntary self-transcendence' of perceptional experiences.
He said, "In the strict sense, the value intrinsic to paintings is to find out the layer of in visibility." In other words, paintings are considered as an impartment of visible objects to the invisibilities. Let's take an example of expressing a mountain over there. The painter should first identify its visible components including light and illumination, shade and reflection, color etc. but go beyond them to recreate the mountain. By setting a theoretical basis for multiple perspectives, Ce´zanne intended to make significant changes to basic geometric shapes and painting methods and further ensure the simultaneous implementation of three-dimensional structure and two-dimensional flatness. Stressing spaces through simplified shapes, he used masses and volumes to recompose and reintegrate various aspects of an object, so that volumes within the object were connected as a series of cubes with each other.
In conclusion, this study might be worth it in that it tries to clarify Ce´zanne's intentions in paintings from Merleau-Ponty's viewpoint and thereby dig out profound meanings that the formalistic criticism fails to cover.
