The present study attempted to examine the effect of artistic activities on the maladaptive behaviors of mentally-retarded children. For this purpose, 20 sessions of artistic activity program was conducted to 8 students (7 boys and 1 girls) in the elementary-school courses of a special school M, located in Gunsan city. The time required for each session was an hour on Wednesdays and 2 hours on Mondays and Fridays. The conclusion drawn based on the result of this artistic activities is as follows:
First, artistic activities had a positive effect on reducing aggressiveness of the mentally retarded. As for the individual changes, child 2 and 4 showed the greatest amount of changes and child 1 showed the least changes. The items that showed the greatest reduction of aggressiveness was 'acting the boss' and 'swearing at and harassing friends', while 'destroying possessions of others' showed the lowest changes.
Second, artistic activities had a positive influence on enhancing concentration of the mentally retarded. As for the individual changes, child 2, 3, and 7 demonstrated the most positive changes, while child 6 and 4 showed little changes. However, child 5 showed deteriorated concentration. Reviewed item by item, 'performing one's own role' showed higher changes than other items. Besides, positive changes were also present in the items 'carrying out simple instructions' and 'never doing irrelevant things in class'. On the other hand, 'studying by oneself' and 'completing assignment without other's help' had only small increase.
Third, artistic activities had a positive influence on the hyperactivity of the children with mental retardation. In individual changes, child 2 and 7 were changed most positively, while child 5 and 8 showed the lowest reduction. Although child 4 and 6 didn't show much reduction, their hyperactivity was gradually stabilized, being reduced through the first to the fourth examination periods. Reviewed item by item, 8 children in the experimental group showed the highest positive changes in the items 'acting without calmness' and 'being restless', and the lowest reduction in 'doing compulsive behavior'.
The limitation of this study is that: there were many problems because the short research with only 20 sessions were conducted from the spring to the fall semesters having summer vacation between them; and more effective results couldn't be acquired because of the maintenance period (vacation). Therefore, considering that application of more continuous long-term artistic programs may bring about a lot of influences on the maladaptive behaviors of the children with mental retardation, more studies are required that can clarify the effect of artistic activities much more systematically and concretely.
Based on the above result, following recommendations were made:
First, out of the recognized necessity of effective educational program application through artistic activities in the actual field of education, further studies are required on more or those programs.
Second, going further ahead from the programs of artistic activities, it is recommended that programs of artistic therapy be studied and applied extensively.
