The purposes of this study was to investigate mental health status among youths, and to investigate how the mental health states affects their school lives.
A total of 580 of middle and high school students in Yeakwan North Kyounsang province was recruited for this study and they were asked to complete self-report survey consisted of several standardized measures.
The analyses of the data provided several important findings. First, the mental health status of female students was shown to be worse than that of male students. In terms of developmental stage, the mental health status of high school students was lower than that of middle school students.
Second, in terms of school life adjustment female students tended to have better adjustment level than male students. However no significant difference was observed in terms of developmental stages.
Third, when the relationship between mental health status and school adjustment was analyzed it was found that depression was the important variable to predict school adjustment followed by obsessive compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity and psychosis. The more serious depression or obsessive compulsive they had, the worse their adjustment to school adjustment was.
Based on these findings several important implications for research and practice were discussed.
