The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the sex-education program on the sex knowledge and sexual attitude of mentally retared students. The subjets in this study were 24 mentally retarded students in the middle and high school section of a special school for idiots In H-gun, Jeon nam Province. The were randomly selected into a 12-member experimental groups and a 12-member control group. The pretest was conducted for the two groups: and the sex-education program was implemented 15 times, three times a week.
And the posttest was conducted in the same way the pretest was done.
The findings of this study were as below :
First, the experimental group that took sex education got a higher grade in sex knowledge than the control group that didn't So the sex-education program turned out effective.
The students took a higher interest in the physical and psychological change of puberty and socializing with the other sex. As their knowledge of pregnancy and childbirth improved a lot in posttest after the sex-education program was conducted, it's proven that the sex-education program was of great use for the change of their sex knowledge on pregnancy and childbirth. Besides, there appeared a wide gap between their grades in the knowledge of sexual violence and obscene video tape or film. This fact showed that they had little knowledge on them improved after being educated with program.
Second, the experimental group that received sex education got a higher grade in sexual attitude then the control group that didn't ,which indicated that the program had an educational effect.
In paticular, they aware from the sexual role and sexual physiology areas of the man-woman equality and the manners of mutual respet. They understood what the role of man and woman should be to go long with the changes of the times, and had a positive and active mind-set about the role performance.
There are some suggestions based on the above-mentioned findings:
First, although teachers feel the necessity of sex education, sex educatin isn' t actually offered properly because of their poor understing of sex-education programs. Sustained efforts should be devoted to developing that kind of programs.
Second, more researches are needed on the change of the sex knowledge and sexual attitude of mentally retarded students by developing sequential sex-education programs to suit Individual level.
